200,000K unemployed in domestic industries effected by price increases in steel products. These price increases have been greater than the 30% level of the tariffs.

Reagan once told his aides that they could play around with "jobs for votes" all they wanted, but under no circumstances should they present him with anything that would violate GATT. This is why.

From the Industry Trade Group summary report:

While insufficient data exist at this time to measure the precise role steel tariffs played in causing such significant price increases, relative to the other factors, it is clear that the Section 201 tariffs played a leading role in pushing prices up.

Yeah sure it is. [/sarcasm]

From the full report:

The vast majority of steel-consuming manufacturers are small businesses. In fact, 98 percent of all the 193,000 U.S. firms in steel-consuming sectors employ less than 500 workers, according to the Small Business Administration.

[IOW] the steel tariffs should be blamed for every small business layoff in this industry cross section during 2002 despite having insufficient data to do so.

Try again.

First, the only thing stupid about the steel tariff was that it was not extensive enough. Second, the USA should withdraw from the WTO immediately. Third, the USA should adopt a set of reasonable economic policies including tariffs to foster capital investment in the USA see my home page for the thriteen points that would be a good start.

Oh, so if we weren't in the WTO, the EU would never have leveled those tariffs against the farmers. Right, try again.

Tariffs won't foster capital investment in the US. They will make the rest of the world avoid us like we have chlamydia unless there is no other place on the planet to buy something except here.
