Mike, you are a hero proved in liberating strife. Thank you so much for serving our nation, and I know you'll take good care of those families. May all those boys rest in peace, they're heroes too.
Oh, and mystery...enjoy!

Welcome home, Tops. I hope this time with wife and family goes by slowly and that you can savor each and every minute. I pray that it is restful physically, emotionally and spiritually and that your "batteries" get a chance to recharge fully before heading back. Thank you for what you are doing. I also pray for wisdom and grace to guide you in helping the families of those who have lost loved ones this week. God bless you!
Cheers, CC :)

I'll try to remember the details......
mystery's Mike and our son, Eric were both at Ft. Campbell waiting to be deployed in those very tense days before the Battle for Iraq began.
Since Mike was a 1stSgt, he had a phone, and was keeping contact with his lovely wife, mystery. She knew that Eric was there, and told Mike about it.
He made a great deal of effort to find Eric and talk to him. At one point he actually came into the barracks to find him, and at another, he pulled him out of formation to talk with him.
Eric said it was so funny because the only time a 1stSgt talks to a lowly private is if he's in trouble, or is quite important!
His Unit was abuzz with wonder at why Eric was so privileged, because they KNEW he couldn't be in trouble!
They laughed as they talked about Mike's wife, and Eric's mother's conspiring to take care of him, and said that he had been "freeped!" (As I recall, Mike thought Eric looked 'very young.')
Eric was honored to be visited by a VIP who cared enough about him to seek him out and make sure he was OK.
Eric's mother will NEVER forget the kindness of mystery's man, Mike!

If you are going to the families, my heart is with you. I had a few friends that tried that when they came home from Vietnam. You are fixing to do the roughest thing you will ever do in your life.

Exactly!
Without this beautiful FR, Eric would never have had someone looking after him, and we wouldn't have had the assurance that he was doing fine.
Those were frightening times for us, and Mike helped us out enormously with what he did for us!

I think so too!
Eric was really amused that you and I were conspiring behind his back to have Mike check up on him, but he was also honored that Mike would do that for him.
It is a great story, and has brought a smile to my face as I retold it!

Eric said it was so funny because the only time a 1stSgt talks to a lowly private is if he's in trouble, or is quite important! He has talked to my son on occasion, and I'm under no illusion that it was because of the latter!
Sergeant, I hope that there is still time for plenty of totally un-military things during the next two weeks; our prayers are with you as you speak with the families of the crew.

There's good news tonite America!
Please remeber amongst all the bad news, that the highly touted "End the Occupation Strike" called for in Baghdad this past weeked DID NOT occur. This was the most unreported story of the weeked.
As a separate thought, maybe LTC West's interrogation techniques might have prevented they shoot down.

I know how excited you are. My husband was in Vietnam and we got to meet for R&R after 9 months apart. He sure looked good, though he'd lost weight, and I didn't want to let him go back.
Hug your husband and make the most of your two weeks together. I'm sure it will be difficult to deal with the tragic deaths and injuries to those involved in the helicopter attack. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
