Granted, but how tough can they be? A Winchester .300 magnum w/ the heavy bullet (180 gr ????) is used for Cape buffalo, Grizzlys, and other dangerous, large prey.
I personally have put holes big enough to drive a truck through in large (14-16 foot) alligators w/ a 12 gauge (w/ slugs). I can't believe that a saltie has that much tougher a hide.

If they were goose hunting, they were carrying the geese, and probably decoys and all manner of other gear. Most likely the guns were unloaded and cased.
Then there's the matter of whether they would have had a clear shot. They probably would have had to aim for the head, and may not have been able to without hitting the victim.
Judging from their names, these may have been Aborigines. If so, they probably knew what they were doing, as well as anyone can in such an extreme situation.

Most likely the guns were unloaded and cased. Not a good policy, what?
...they probably knew what they were doing
At least the Aunt did. She invoked the name of the Lord whilst smiting that crock on the nose! LOL!!!

They probably would have had to aim for the head... I suspect a clean hit anywhere would convince a crock to change his dinner plans.

This side of Jurassic Park it is difficult to conceive of a more aggresive creature than one of these reptilians who has matured enough to descend Austrialian's rivers and work the river mouth, the surf and the far ocean reaches.
The natives of Queensland will not venture near the surf up north. Divers have been taken from the Great Barrier Reef.
Here is an interesting speculation: Confined to a great tank of sea water, occupied by a great white shark and a sea going crocodile, which of them would survive?

"AWWWWWWWW!!
She's a beauty, isn't she?? Just look at those teeth, will ya mate! A fine, fine specimen. She could tear a man's leg clean off she could! They're a mite dangerous, mate - so stand back while I return her to her native habitat...."

I was shocked we could get almost 30 posts into this and have nobody bring up Steve Irwin. That just didn't seem right.

There are American crocodiles, but they aren't as agressive as the alligators.
