Pat Buchanan referred to it as "Soviet Canuckistan". I live just south of the border and nearly wet my pants laughing at that one.

This is very interesting!

AmSoc was once so much further "ahead" than CanSoc...

Hutchison recounts King's recollection of a wartime meeting with FDR. "'I said to Roosevelt last time we met, how do you expect to go on spending all these billions out of deficits? The President said, well, Mackenzie, my family has held French securities since before the Revolution and they're still paying interest; why can't we do the same?' At this revelation of Roosevelt's economic adolescence, King raised his hands in a gesture of friendly despair. It was hard, he confessed, to see what would come out of this dizzy sort of financing."

In a word - Socialism.

And if they have their way, they'll do the same to California. Hopefully, it will be stopped in its tracks.

My grandmother-in-law has a condo in south Florida and many European transplants to Canada have their winter homes in her complex. I always wondered why in god's name they chose Canada.

Much much easier to transplant to. Gets them a little closer to what they consider is "heaven."

I am astonished and saddened at the vitriol we aim at our largest trading partner. No wonder everyone hates us - we seem to hate the entire world...

Naw, I don't hate 'em. Just had enough dealings with them to laugh at someone elses joke about 'em.

And being so close to the border we also get Canadian TV - if you think the jokes here are rough, you should see what their own political satirists do to THEIR OWN government.

SS. Rings hollow like the other leftist line " The whole world hates us!"

Anytime I see the word "hate" I first think lefty.

The U.S. will be able to buy Canada at a bargain price in about 20 years. One of the biggest countries in the world, Canada has plentiful natural resources we'll be able to use for the next 100 years.

Yes it does [Canada's changes to immigration policy corresponds to Canada's decline], but try to get anyone to admit it

The question occurred to me because New York City--the immigration capital of America--is always going broke.

You would think a city so rich in industrious immigrants would be among the wealthiest city governments in America.

Would you happen to know if despite Canda's immense size, most of her citizens might live compressed together because most of Canada's climate and/or geography is inhospitable?

80% of Canada's population lives within two hours drive of the U.S. border.

Once called the "Switzerland of the North", as late as 1968 it was the world's second-richest country.

Hmmmm.... I don't remember much about Canada of the '60s other than it was a Mecca for draft dodgers.

Ol' peanut-brain Jimmy-Bub Carter shoulda barricaded the borders and left 'em up there to freeze their heinies off.

Canada resents the U.S. for the same reason a kid resents his older brother. The older brother has more privileges, is stronger, can beat him up from time to time, but also defends his little brother. One day the older brother goes off to college, and the little brother realizes that he is no longer in his brother's shadow, but alas, also no longer enjoys his protection.
