No current info that I've heard, but with the Simi Valley fire coming down into northwestern LA county, I have a feeling that the smoke situation isn't going to change by tomorrow afternoon. It might, but I doubt it at the moment.

Then again, these fires have been changing so quickly that it's hard to tell. Yesterday at this time, I was absolutely, positively certain that I would be evacuated by tonight - and yet here I am, still at home, the western end of the Grand Prix fire near me mostly out. :)

Best thing to do would be to call one of the fire information numbers and see if there's any contact information for the airport folks. The two numbers which would likely be most prevalent from my list of a few posts back, I'll put at the end of this post.

Are you in SoCal, or are you shipping to SoCal? If you're shipping to SoCal, they may be able to land a plane in the high desert and then bring the fish around via some form of vehicle. If you're shipping from SoCal, Palmdale airport is the most local open airport that I'm aware of.

Here's those info numbers:

Public Information Hotline Number (USE THIS NUMBER FOR DIRECT FIRE INFO!): (909) 383-5688
Val Verde: (213) 247-7686

Thanks for the info. I'm in New Zealand and the cargo goes via Air New Zealand, a connecting flight. Sadly, 0800 numbers aren't free from here. My hubby called Wellington's ATC and they said the Air NZ flights hadn't been diverted so far, that 2 runways are still open at LAX. Of course that doesn't mean tomorrow's flight won't be divereted at a few hundred miles out. It's helpful to know from someone closer to the situation what things are looking like.

New Zealand? You're definitely a ways away, aren't you? :)

I'd say that they'd probably allow it to land, if two runways are open currently at LAX. They have had a few sporadic flights during the day depending on whether the smoke is cleared enough to land/take off, but it hasn't been constant in the slightest bit.

They might temporarily divert the flight to Palmdale airport, which is considerably northeast of Los Angeles, or possibly to Ontario (if the smoke has cleared up), which is within reasonable driving distance of Los Angeles. However, chances are that as soon as they possibly could, they'd take it back up and fly the rest of the way to LAX.

I am in Camarillo. I just went outside and looked up to the sky. I could see the constellation Orion - the smoke cloud which had hung around all day has dissipated. Although all the cars in the driveways and streets are covered in ash, I see no more glow on the horizon. It still smells of smoke, though.

Thanks for the posts and the updates.

I'm smack dab in the middle of San Diego, and I can actually see clearly across Mission Valley for the first time since the fires broke out in the county yesterday morning.

Praise the Lord and pray for the safety of all of our brave fire fighters.

"For the first time in a decade, California's considerable firefighting resources were tapped out, officials said Sunday as they sought additional firefighters, as well as equipment and specialists, from out of state."

Almost 12 miles south of San Dimas, so approximately 20 miles south-southwest of Claremont (the Grand Prix fire). It's completely and totally safe right now - the fire would have to go west through La Verne and San Dimas, then south through parts of Pomona and Chino to get to it. Ain't gonna happen, especially as the fire is essentially out in Claremont right now.

Good. Cal Poly's safe.

Someone just informed someone else that Channel 4 tv crews are at the structure fire. They didn't sound too happy about it.

I think of "Cal Poly" as being in San Luis Obispo CA.
