"This would not be happening if the United States, this wealthiest nation on earth, had a DEFENSE DEPARTMENT and a WHITE HOUSE that had cared enough about the American people to make sure there was a NATIONAL FIRE-FIGHTING FORCE equipped to protect us..." Oh goodie. A Federal Fire Department! Do they fight fires, or start them?

The people first hit with fires didn't have time to save all of their treasures, but I'm fairly certain that everyone who thinks the fire has a reasonable chance of getting to them, have packed their treasured items.
You and you daughter are so right: furniture can be replaced and likely it's insured, but photos and heirlooms and many things of sentimental value can never be replaced.

The reason I was concerned is that I am into genealogy and have photos of ancestors from the late 1800's and early 1900's. They can never be replaced.

Put your precious genealogical photos on discs, make several copies, and distribute them to interested relatives. That is what I have done to preserve mine.

I'm praying on a continuous basis that these fires are stopped and that those fighting them and being affected by them, will be protected. God Bless all of our freeper friends out there.

"Has more to do with people wanting to live in a scrub-chaparral environment and unfortunate weather conditions than the absence of some sort of "National Fire-Fighting Force."
Actually it has more to do with wacky environmental ideas that have lead to these areas not having had fires for 25 years.

Good news, my brothers home was saved. If you go halfway down from the first "i" in "Kingspine" and up from the "R" in "Rue Cheaumont" and see the elongated T shaped street with the little nook at the bottom, that is my brother's cul-de-sac. The house is intact, as is a car they had to leave behind. Amazing...

Boo Hooo hahhahahah something tells me you have never been in one of these fires... I have.... MANY.
You do not know what you are talking about.... First whiz bang, stop the Santa Ana winds... come on they are only 60 to 70 miles per hour. These fires are fanned by them. There is NO amount of people, equipment or technology that can protect against a brush fire moving at windspeed ( yes 60 mph) unless you are talking the hand of God. So if you do not know what the hell you are saying... don't make a fool of yourself by tacking on a political agenda to a post.
