I don't know whether it's a state or local law. I live in a high fire danger area in CA. and just replaced my original wood shake roof with stone-surfaced composition material. The installers told me it was legal to repair/replace a certain percentage of wood shakes but they can't be used in full re-roof jobs or new construction. I wanted to go with tile but found my home wasn't built to handle that much weight.

Every time the hot offshore Santa Ana winds kick up the arsonists seem to come to life. I call it Arson Season. Nearly every single brush fire I can think of in the 10 years I've been here have arson-caused. Many have been the work of firefighters who want to earn a little extra cash. Those people should be burned to death, a little at a time.
