Bush Issues Ramadan Statement

The White House has issued President Bush's annual greeting to Muslims around the world who will observe the holy month of Ramadan.

In his message, President Bush says Islam is a peaceful religion that has helped shape the character of the United States, and has made great contributions to the world.

Mr. Bush said Americans cherish the freedom to worship and, he said, "we remain committed to welcoming individuals of all religions."

During Ramadan, President Bush said Muslims fast, pray, contemplate and renew their commitment to lead lives of honesty, integrity and compassion.

Fair enough; I'll avoid the 'intent of the Founding Fathers' argument regarding what was considered a 'religion' back then. Let's take the Constitution out of the argument altogether; would you please define 'cult' for me?

If we are in fact ( and NOT of our own accord ) at war with most of Islam, refusing to recognise that fact is basically a psychotic reaction. Make believe is not a sustainable strategy for defence.

We're at war with Islam, the ideology. By using the term "characterize" I think Snerfling was conceding that point. The strategy is to at least attempt to separate non-observant (i.e. non-fundamentalist) Muslims from the jihadist ideology.

In many ways it psychotic, but then again, so is fundamentalist Islam.

Not need to avoid whatever your believe the Founding Father's intention was...it has no bearing. If the founders had thought that defining an American religion was so important they would have included that in the Constitution or Bill or Rights. Oops, the did consider that very important and expressly forbade the government from defining religion.

I guess that must have been their intention all along.
