That is a fantastic idea! Politicians seem to assume that legal immigrants are somehow in favor of illegal immigration, or ought to be. When the candidates for governor of California debated, Arianna Huffington lectured Arnold Schwarzenegger, saying how could he, an immigrant, be so cold as to oppose driver's licenese for illegals; that he, of all people, should be in favor of it! Of course, she deliberately neglected to mention the fact that Scharzenegger came here legally.

I love your idea. It will be a lot harder for the media to call groups of legal immigrants "racist" or "xenophobic." One charge that will no doubt be leveled at them, though, and that they must be prepared for, is, "Now that you got in to this country, you want to selfishly and cruelly deny others the opportunity to get in!" Believe me, people will say it. And when they do, the legal immigrants ought to give the same response that Peter Brimelow gives: "Just because I made it onto the lifeboat doesn't mean I can't point out that the lifeboat is now full and sinking."

Student visas are one of the ways these criminals use to enter LEGALLY and overstay.

How about simply doing away with the "hide for 10 years and you can stay" provision? How about born of illegal parents and you are not a us citizen? (no more anchor babies.)

I don't know where you get that there are 10 times more illegal immigrants here than legal ones. We admit about 1 million legal immigrants per year, while estimates range about how many illegals make it and stay each yr, but I've never seen it estimated at above the legal number.

And the estimated total number of illegals is less than the number of legal foreign born residents.

The truth is that legal and illegal immigration both create problems and should both be addressed.

But as to the topic at hand; its become common for Republicans to support the politically suicidal policy of unending mass immigration, but what is it about Utah? One of the most conservative states has produced one of the most clueless Senators on the issue of immigration. Hatch has a counterpart in the House, Chris Cannon (I think), also from Utah, who is even worse in his cluelessness and pandering. And the sad thing is that these two are generally reliably conservative on other issues, yet they support a policy that is helping tilt the demography of this nation towards the left/Democrats. Go figure.

And it is true that Hatch proposed amending the Constitution to allow immigrants to be President. Thats one of the worst ideas in the history of bad ideas; right up there with gay marriage and women in combat.

As for President Bush, very few politicians will come out and support a honestly identified blanket amnesty bill because they know most Americans oppose amnesty. They instead support deceptive, bogus 'Guest Worker' Bills. Bush has said he supports the one proposed by the Arizona Republicans (McCain,Flake,Kolby).

This bill allows current illegals to participate w/o first returning home. It is thus an amnesty.

This bill allows the 'guests' to gain permanent residency after x amount of yrs. It is therefore deceptive since the word 'guest' means to most people a person who eventually leaves. By allowing 'guests' to become permanent residents the bill is actually increasing legal immigration. And once they become permanent residents, they will be able to sponsor extended family members to immigrate, thus massively increasing legal immigration. In truth, thats how these guys propose solving illegal immigration: Massively increase legal immigration.

So if they were honest they would call their bill a 'Bill to Massively Increase already Mass Levels of Legal Immigration and to Offer Amnesty to Illegals.

But they won't be honest because they know most polls show a majority of Americans want legal immigration reduced, not increased.

And back to President Bush; its widely believed he was on the verge odf supporting an amnesty for Mexican illegals before 9-11. The Democrats responded by outpandering him and offering amnesty to all illegals.

Face it, on many of the most contentious social issues, President Bush is no conservative. Immigration is one. Racial Preferences is another. But I will credit him for standing tough on gay marriage....so far at least.
