I don't remember anyone saying Japan would dominate the world a few years ago, except for some American car manufacturers.

Japan aint no China.

Actually I have. The Chinese use a form of phonetic alphabet for computer work, etc.

but in the technology they will be able to apply to their ICBMs aimed at US cities. The Cold War is back on in a big way.

But of course, and one could not blame any country that cherished its self interests not to advance such capabilities...considering the new US dictate of "pre-emptive" action against those it "deemed a threat".

We are reaping, that which we have sown...

"we're going to have to work to get moving again."

No way!!! Our "leaders" are too busy quibling and resting on our laurels and NOW will go totally into denial!!!

The Daschles, Pillowsees, Clintons, Gores, the 9 dwarfs et al and even many Moderat Repellicans will be so relieved that finally a turd whirled cuntry is finally catching up so "Earth could be fair." (Hitlery Clinton's commencement speech) Parity will bring us whirled peas at any price!!! The ultimate price to our FreeRepublic... The loss of leadership.

If America were discovered today, we've become so complacent and PC, we couldn't even conquer the continent again! (we'd have to do an EnvironMental Impact Statement every 2 kilometers!!!)

We have let millions and millions of outsiders in. They have corrupted our culture, our religion, our ability to speak and think freely

I think you are right about the millions and millions of outsiders, but I think you are wrong about who corrupted our culture.

I assume you are talking about mexicans. When I watch tv or movies or listen to music, I don't see any hispanic or mexicans at all. Affirmative action was aimed at citizen blacks. When you see bogus racism claims, it is usually blacks. The liberal BS socialism like perscriptions drugs, everyone gets an a in school, affirmative action, legalized abortion, drug culture. All that stuff was home grown. The mexicans may be blamed for bilingual stuff, and over use of hospitals and schools. But the culture decay was almost 100% home grown. Limitations on free speech has nothing to do with mexicans. Hippies, drugs, divorce and abortion all got their impetus well before the mexican invasions.

China has always been the world power of record except for the last 300 years or so. Maybe this is the correct way of things?

The US did not exist until 300 years ago. Perhaps the new reality is that there is a new kid on the block, the USA.

I hope I'm wrong, but I can see this date as marking the end of the American Era...and the beginning of the Chinese Era...

No joke. I haven't been a poster for long (though I've lurked for a couple years), but I've had a theory about the Chicoms for a good while now:

In about 2005 or 2006, China and North Korea will get together. China will assault Taiwan with its newly-declared conventional ballistic missile arsenal, and North Korea will overrun the DMZ and finish their never-ended war on South Korea. With the U.S. focused on the Middle East, we just don't have the troops to adequately defend both regions, as we are Congressionally mandated to do. Step one is a counterstrike. The nuclear kind. Step two is a draft (which I will avoid by immediately signing up for USMC OCS). Or, we could try and avoid the whole mess by giving NASA funds for useful goals, like the next-generation reusable space vessel. But I don't see that as likely unless the RINOs in Congress are deposed and we get a real majority in the House and Senate.

The Chinese would have discovered (or could have) the Americas if not for the an edict from their emperor.

The Shenzhou V, or "Divine Ship V", was expected to orbit the Earth 14 times before returning after about 21 hours.

With 15 orbits, he'd have gotten an eggroll.

They are doing what we did more than 40 years ago...

Even then it took them until now to do it with stolen modern technology...

It's a bit a bit premature to say they are going to surpass us anytime soon don’t you think?

Wouldn't any American company that sets up shop in China have to give controlling interest (51%) to the communist Chinese government?

Normally, the Chinese government will not allow foreign control (ownership) of any enterprise in China.

This may be changing, however. China Yuchai [NYSE CYD], which builds diesel engines in China, has come up with an enron-like (?) scheme which has allowed foreigners to control this company. As a result, this stock is one of the best performing stocks in the entire US stock market over the last year.

CYD is incorporated in Bermuda, and has their headquarters in Singapore. 30% of their stock is held by Hong Leong Asia, LTD, a Singapore holding company which has the right to elect CYDs directors. CYD holds 70% of Guangxi Yuchai Machinery Company, LTD, which actually builds the motors.

"Doing business in China means dancing a minuet with special power brokers tied to the government." --Paul Wolansky, head of the Cathay Investment Fund.

He also goes on to say, "China is the most free enterprise country on earth. When you come back from China to the United States, you think you're coming to a communist country".

Not bad for being only 40+ years behind in the space race...

What you don't understand is that it was America's last generation that sent us to the moon, and China's current generation that will send them to the moon. The brilliant individuals who sent Americans to the moon are all either retired or dead. Their apprentices mostly moved on in 1972 when Nixon killed the program.

I'm sorry, but America's current generation has neither the knowledge nor the ability to design and launch a capsule like the Chinese just did, even if the politicians gave them the money. The "modern" generation has grown up watching MTV, playing video games, and hanging out on the street corners, not building model rockets and studying mathematics and science.

There are no more Wernher von Brauns or Gene Kranzes within NASA.

Well.
After Sputnik, we built a whole new infrastructure to get into space.
We don't have to build the infrastructure now.
That may be the problem.
The infrastructure itself has become a bloated bureaucracy that is now inefficient and top heavy with PCness.
We may do good by 'killing' the infrastructure and rebuilding anew.

"Either way they out-number us---they're a massive giant that has its eye on having a bigger role in the world! "

Iraq’s army outnumbered us (And claimed that it was no Afghanistan), demonstrating that population and intent are impotent without the proper organization and experience.
