My apologies; U70.1 was a careless transposition. I’m sorry for the confusion. Don’t you find it odd that Wuhan Flu is given it’s own specific code, as opposed to, for example,H5N1 (J09.X2), or Swine Flu (J09.X2), or Avian (again, J09.X2)? This is outside my area (for ten years I’ve done coding for rehab/reconstruction) but it seems strange to me.

Possibly because all of those influenza pandemics occurred prior to October 2015 ICD-10-CM? Similarly, rapid influenza tests are specific for A or B.
Prior to that (ICD-9), the codes for those were distinct (488.12, 488.02, etc); now they are indistinct and Wuhan Flu is distinct. To add to this, there is a “do not query” status on Wuhan Flu diags. As near as I can tell, we’re into a area that is going to be overly ripe for yet more fraud and as quickly as possible (given this out-of-cycle update as mandated by WHO).
fyi--WHO does not mandate codes used in the U.S. The WHO publishes ICD-10. The U.S. uses ICD-10-CM, and adopts codes through the Coordination & Maintenance Committee, which meets twice per year. The U.S. adopted U07.1 from the WHO code set. The U.S. did not adopt U07.2 from the WHO code set.

If putting a patient on a ventilator gets the hospital $39K vs $13K for case, you can bet your a$$ they’ll put you on one even if it’s not the appropriate treatment for more severe symptmns. Patient outcome isn’t a consideration.
