I mean that, where I live, the County Commission is where the real local power and opportunity to make money are. Various finagles occur, such as the Democrats’ attempting to enact districts instead of at-large representation, because they can never get a Democrat elected (unless he changes parties).
On one occasion, the Commissioners attempted to pass lifetime health insurance benefits for themselves. In another incident, they issued sewer permits to housing developers far in excess of the county’s sewer capacity. A contract dispute with the County Manager around that time resulted in his walking away with around $500,000, even though he was under indictment for several real estate swindles.
The point of my post above was that, if there is going to be significant fraud in the primary here, it would be in the Republican CC primary, not the presidential primary. By the time we have our primary in North Carolina, it’s too late to make any difference in choosing the presidential candidate.
I was not making a sweeping statement about county commissioner and their equivalent nationwide, just talking about specific local events.
How big is your County?
About 215,000 population. It’s an outlying area of Charlotte.
I’m sorry to hear about the shenanigans of your County. My county is about the same size in population, approximately 210,000. However, Mohave county is the fifth largest county in the entire country. We go from Lake Havasu City all the way to the Utah border town of Colorado City (yes, Warren Jeffs’ FLDS compounds.) My district has about 40,000 as we have five Supervisors (Commissioners). If we tried to pass lifetime health benefits I would be out on my arse tomorrow! Our entire board is made up of Republicans, some more conservative than others. I have been called a right wing extremist by another member of the board. There is great power in local government and I wish it was used often against the intrusive mandates of State and Federal government. I’m trying my best to do so.
I remember when you were elected. I’m glad you haven’t given up in frustration!
It is frustrating at times. Other times I have felt gratification like I had never imagined I could. Tonight I am in Salt Lake City at the American Lands Council Conference. My passion and heart is on the transfer of public land issue out here in the west. Without that happening, we will eventually cease to exist. There is a war on the West being waged from Washington and it comes in the form of the EPA, BLM, USFWS, Etc. the agencies are taking over and destroying and mismanaging the public land and wildlife that lived off it.
When I get home from my vacation in my mother’s retirement community, I will pull up information on your organization. My teenagers all study forestry, wildlife, soils, etc., for a state competition. Looking at the political aspect you’re addressing should interest them.
