I understand your point, but I see it a little differently. I think that their supporters are with them because the rhetoric of the other candidates is not aggressive enough on the social issues for which they care the most. Their supporters really don’t care about the other issues as much. If Huckabee or Santorum stray on those, their supporters might not like it, but their fidelity on the core social issues is enough for them to turn their head and ignore their infidelity on some other issues.
In other words, they trust them on the issues that they care about the most. I think that Santorum has earned that trust. Huckabee? I’m not so sure.
