I like Cain and I guess he’s now my 1st-choice, but in a way I can’t really bring myself to get excited all that much in his campaign, because I have the distinct feeling he’s going to get deep-sixed before long. Doesn’t he have thousands of hours of radio-show material, which all sorts of out-of-context snippets could be taken? Plus, Cain has had a terrible tendency to let the media lure him down right down their garden-path. Seems to really portend trouble down the line.
Palin is a “false idol?” How so? I picked her because I’m tired of “great men” who stream into Washington to make a name for themselves and get connected to power and money. Palin eschews power, she loves her country only. I believe that. Sue me.
>> I was answering a question...
OK, so I’m *asking* a question. Please answer mine. How could you support a goofy RINO like Gingrich when you hold yourself out as an arbiter of all things conservative and spit continuously on Perry, who is ten times the conservative Newt Gingrich is?
I’m calm enough — just incredulous at your cluelessness (at best) or selective hypocrisy (at worst).
I have said before that her instincts are keen when it comes to politics. If she navigates this minefield I would count it as a masterstroke. I’m reminded of a scene from The Hunt for Red October-
“The hard about playing chicken Mr. Ryan, is knowing when to flinch.”
No.
Not sure Texas is, as you put it, “the most conservative state in the union.” We’re a mixed bag, especially around Austin and in the Valley.
We’re an independent bunch and don’t mind thumbing our nose at Washington and doing things right for ourselves, but there’s a healthy mix of libertarianism and orneryness that flavors that “conservatism” to which you refer. Mostly, we want the feds to leave us alone, and Perry’s greatest achievement has been in sassing Washington.
On in-state matters, he gets a C minus at best. He’s backstabbed us on many issues. My pet peeve has been his dogged resistance to eminent domain reform. Perry has demonstrated that he thinks in Kelo terms.
And Perry got elected three times, not because he’s done such a good job, but rather because the Dems are so weak here that he has had no viable opposition.
He so angered his conservative base over the Trans-Texas Corridor that he won re-election in 2006 without a majority of the vote, just on a plurality.
Texan here, who will vote for Perry only if I have to.
That may be so, Doc. She definitely would have had my support and vote had she announced. I have to tell you, I’m sick of the game playing. The stakes are too high in this election and we need to be moving on to solutions, not playing cat and mouse games.
Exactly right. I support Palin because her unique mix of traditional conservatism, western libertarianism, and mid-American populism is 100% in line with my own political philosophy to a “t.” No other politician/leader out there quite matches up. Added to this the incredible grace and courage she has demonstrated against the most mind-bogglingly viscious, all-out war to destroy her and her family, and I’m staying in her corner and supporting her no matter what route she takes!
“How could you support a goofy RINO like Gingrich when you hold yourself out as an arbiter of all things conservative and spit continuously on Perry, who is ten times the conservative Newt Gingrich is?”
I don’t “spit” on Perry, I just point out his weakness, like coddling illegals, calling us heartless, you know, the usual stuff that I never hear conservatives doing.
As to your question. I just don’t get as wound up about the VP and I don’t have a big litmus test. In fact, I voted for Reagan in 1980, fully knowing that the MODERATE, George H. W. Bush was also on the ballot. I assume that you would have instead voted for Carter (or Anderson), or sat it out?
>> As to your question. I just dont get as wound up about the VP and I dont have a big litmus test.
Fair enough.
So if Cain wins the nomination and chooses either Perry or Gingrich for VP, which one would you prefer?
Who is more conservative? Cain or Perry?
It’s no wonder that good people don’t seek office. I suspect, and have said this already, that it was probably the incident in Hollyweird with the middle-aged gay creep attacking Bristol that made her decision for her. If it were just her, she wouldn’t care. But I honestly think she is deeply committed to her family and is tired of the attacks from sickos. It is a tactic from the left to force decent honest people into the shadows in order to preserve their deviant agenda. At some point someone is going to have to step up when Sarah is called a whore and do some good old-fashioned bitch-slappin’.
Rick Santorum!!!!
God has always been "in the act". He still is.
I guess the writer didn't listen to Sarah Palin. I have to find her quote!
Otherwise it's a good column.
Sarah Palin supporters: keep your options open, choose wisely and pray non stop.
We'll find our TEA PARTY PATRIOT in this field.
As for me, I'm listening to "their words" carefully.
I'm very fortunate. I met our conservatives in person, in Tampa and spoke to all personally. I liked every one of them. Michele Bachmann was particulary nice to me, as were Herman Cain, Speaker Newt and Governor Perry (who kissed me on my right cheek).
Ditto for Romney, but I said *conservatives*.....lol.
“So if Cain wins the nomination and chooses either Perry or Gingrich for VP, which one would you prefer?”
Between those two...probably Perry, just because the MSM would have a field day with Newt’s personal life and make him into another Quayle. Perry would not be as much baggage. But given that Cain really needs someone who’s been around the block in DC, maybe some Senator (or former Senator), but no name comes to the top of my mind.
Palin is fine, it’s the mindless worship of her that I find offputting.
Apples and oranges.
Since Cain has never held political office, he is a debate society Conservative. Talks the talk, but no way to tell how he would walk the walk. He’s an empty vessel.
With his extensive political experience, Perry is an excellent governing conservative. He has to deal with real world issues, been re-elected in a conservative state, and maintained a fairly steady conservative direction. As it is when you work a real job, you make mistakes, lose some battles, and say occasional stupid things. Overall, he’s done a lot of good things for Texas and should be a steady President.
Cain is an empty vessel huh........................Phhhtttt
