They did shut down. And it used to be vast. In 1977 Netherlands produced 86+ billion cubic meters of gas per year.

That was the peak. in 1987 66 billion cubic meters. 1997 was 71 bcm. 2007 was 62. 2017 38 bcm. Some of that 2017 hit is from Green stuff but they were dropping long before that, despite ongoing technology improvements. They faced an undulating plateau with mild downslope.

This is the fate of the entire North Sea and the countries depending on it. So . . . that vast field has been going empty for decades. It’s not vast anymore.
