If I were Trump, I would do nothing. Let others address the issue. Where is the big tough UN?

It’s all bluster imo.

The Houthis FAFO’d. One missile going up from them resulted in the USA being able to string together many connections between their military assets and the C&C infrastructure...so we leveled all of it.

I would think Trump wouldn’t have pulled the trigger if he truly thought Russia would do something in response.

Gee, what could Russia do in response to Trump bombing Iran? Invade Ukraine again?

The best result for Iran would be to stop. They can retain their government.

The Government of Iran doubts it can stay in power if it loses face. Absolutist governments tend to be brittle once pushed far enough because there is no peaceful way for them to be told they have lost the mandate of heaven. They seem strong as long as the subject think the government is strong and that government gives out nice benefits. Losing face makes the government look weak and assailable, possible to likely causing revolution.

Jefferson’s wooden navy would be an advantage vs magnetic mines. Not sure what anti-mine capabilities Biden left for Trump, but we might be wishing for more. Sinking Iran’s collection of subs would be an interesting exercise in ASW.

“Let’s see how quickly it re-opens once they close it. “Either re-open the strait or the Kharg Island terminal implodes” should be the only words exchanged.”

We have been patrolling there for years since Iran tried to close it in years past. And I have been saying for years that in a pinch *we* should close it to Iranian traffic while leaving it open to everyone else.

“If Iran shuts Hormuz, they shut off all their export revenue, which they desperately need.”

I assume that Iran is not going to blockade its own oil exports. Everyone else - perhaps - but not its own.

Iran’s options of enforcing said closure are to:

Mine the strait.
Attack ships that enter the strait.
Board and seize ships that enter the strait.

It’s notable that the last time Iran mined the strait, the USS Samuel B Roberts (FFG 58) struck one of those mines and was severely damaged. Four days later, the US response to that attack was one of the most lopsided naval battles in modern history: Operation Praying Mantis.

During the Iran-Iraq Tanker War, Iran used a variety of weapons to attack ships in the strait. Missiles, speed boats, mines, naval/shore artillery and helicopters. Trump was pretty clear with the Houthis about US freedom of navigation. But Iran will be desperate to retaliate for last night’s strikes. Sailing a US Navy ship through the strait right now would be a very high risk move. Iran might be willing to take the pounding that would result. If the US suffered significant casualties, our retaliation could be extensive, making Operation Praying Mantis look insignificant in comparison.
