If the USN suspects that even one slow sub is in the area they will keep the carriers away until its neutralized. The midget subs are hard to detect shallow water. The Norks use them quite a bit and they always seems to evade the ASW assets.

Might not be much difference. Lay doggo on the bottom in the intended path of a carrier group, surface under the carrier and detonate nuke. 72 virgins for all.
DE boats can be quieter than nuke boats because there are no reactor cooling pumps. only air circulating fans and crew noises. (of course, that'd mean they could be picked up on passive sonar five times a day...)
