I wonder what would make their lives so empty that they glom onto causes so remote from their daily life as if the end of the world is coming.

I have concluded they have limited family connections, no boyfriend/husband, no faith of any kind except in the climate gods.

In other words, the things that keep most people grounded and satisfied with their lives.

They have nothing going on, and so connecting to a cause no matter how irrelevant to their own personal lives, especially if they have a bunch of other people like them doing the same thing, is what gives them comfort or meaning, or something.
