The military sure takes it seriously and there are big efforts in the civilian sector to prepare for it.

The military has been building in protection for its equipment for generations, and developing the weapons utilizing it for warfare.

“Their EMP missiles need only to be detonated above our aircraft carriers in the Pacific to render their radars, radios, and navigation systems useless – as well as those of every aircraft they carry. Because of the range of an EMP pulse, they don’t need direct hits. A miss by a mile will do.”

They are hardened against EMP as well as our aircraft.

“Still wouldn’t hurt to have our power grid hardened to protect against EMPs...the sun can do that to us as well.”

We buy our transformers from China.

China could lose 600,000 and be the better for it. Never threaten an overpopulated country with death, they may thank you for it.

I repair and refurbish pad mounted and pole mounted transformers. 9/10 of them are made in Mexico and the other 1/10 are US built. I think I might have seen one Chinese transformer in my carreer

” I think I might have seen one Chinese transformer in my carreer”

I thought the big ones were made in China.

Why do you think the push to Fiber Optics occured and that most cities put there power underground?

True, an EMP would do a lot of damage, but with Fiber Optics and power underground too much would survive and an replying in kind would not be fun for the perps.

Most of them are prolecs which are made in Mexico. Ermcos are somewhat common, also Mexican made. I don’t recall seeing a Chinese 3-phase, only china built one I’ve seen was a single phase, primed at the factory. Mexico doesn’t put primer on the metal so they’ll rot through and lose their oil if we don’t inspect them every few years. Howards, Coopers are American made and I think Central Maloni and ABBs are as well. Don’t see too many malonis. Maybe 20 ever in my experience

An EMP set off 300 miles over Kansas would knock power out to most of the country.

Yes, I have read both “one second after”, and “one year after”. Both were very good reads. My wife is planning on getting me “five years after” for Christmas, and I look forward to reading it.

Tell her to save the money…it’s not that great.

The first novel was good. But it is out of date. The EMP threat would be localized and temporary.

A CME on the other hand….

Out of date? Temporary and localized? I’ve not stayed up to date on this issue. Please tell me if you know, have we done work on hardening the grid in the past few years?
