This is true, and I had thought about it earlier, but I’m old-fashioned and still use masculine pronouns when I don’t know. I did just find that an article referred to the pilot as a he, after using they/their multiple times before they got to that.
Some of the article mentions that there are a lot of indicators that something is wrong with the plane so that the pilot would know to eject, but it’s not specific about what those reasons might be.
