In Kentucky it depends on many things. Are you in a National Park? Was the bear a threat to your livestock or self and family?

My daughter lives about six miles from me and has a 400lbs black bear that gets on her porch at times looking for food. A month or so ago my son-in-law who goes to work at 5:30am was up around 4:30am getting ready for work and took their dog out to use the bathroom and the bear was on the porch. He did all the things you are supposed to do, kept up garbage, no food out there, made lots of noise and carried on and the bear was not inclined to leave but did amble off the porch to their driveway where he just sat down and looked at my SIL.

He grabbed a .12 gauge and threw in three slugs and two loads of #8 shot and walked out and hammered that bear in the butt with a #8 shot and he took off skipping. One game warden had told us to do this with a problem bear, doesn’t kill them but stings them good. Another warden was like, we don’t do anything and you can’t even if they eat your dog which got a less than civil response from my SIL. This bear had caused problems before and they called the game wardens office and this was the interaction before the event where he put #8 into the bears rump.

Years ago I had a wildlife biologist in my area tell me that mountain lions existed around and I said I know I have seen one around my place several times. He told me if one becomes a problem and I have to put it down to immediately put it in a 50 gallon drum, cover it with the lid and haul it away from your property a good ways and dump the entire barrel. He said trust me, if you take the lid off that barrel it will be found. Take it for what’s worth...

I fired my friend’s SP101 with some hot 158 gr .357 rounds. It took a two-handed death grip on the gun to keep the trigger guard from bashing my middle finger during recoil.

I think the GP100 is much better in this regard. Also don’t have that problem when shooting my S&W model 66 .357.

9mm is a .38 short!

ROFL!!!

Just curious ... do you shoot either one? Do you LOAD either one?

Yes, it's physically shorter.

Who cares?

For any given bullet weight, 9mm carries about 50% more energy than .38 Special.

Just so you know.

Where do you live? My screen name commemorates I was born in Louisville. I lived there for awhile. I attended Murray State University and loved the Land Between the Lakes area.
Also lived in Henderson briefly (1 year).

Agree with your summary. I carry a DAO SP101 chambered for 357, but I carry it with +P 38 Special hollowpoints. If I go into the field armed, I'll carry a 44 mag, but have carried my GP100 with 4" barrel with high velocity loads.

I also own a S&W 66 no dash. (Along with a 66-1). But the no dash model had problems with locking up after it got heated up from firing. IIRC, it had something to do with binding up due to heat expansion of the gas ring (moved from the cylinder to the crane starting with the -1). It made reliability of the 66 no dash highly questionable.

Not an issue with me as it's strictly a range toy/collector's item to me.

You need to have a really good reason. We have a bear season but if you shoot one without a license or out of season you better have a good reason.

Dang. Georgia, too.

I lived and worked in kalifornia for awhile. We'd have joggers killed by mountain lions up in northern kal (rural, mountainous, heavily forested), and call for a referendum to take the lions off the endangered list.

But it was the dope smoking flatlanders/city trash who would vote it down. And those clowns had never even seen a lion.

For which reason, if I were going to arm myself for potential defense against bears, I would use a .357 Magnum, 158gr SWC hardcast, at a near max powder charge.

I know someone who owns a Marlin 1894 in .41 Magnum. Last manufactured in the early 1990s.

I’m launching 180 grain Barnes Hardcast thru the same Firearms and the pain is manageable considering I want it for
‘Bear Spray!’

Yuppers...
I got 180 gr Barnes in my ‘Bear Spray.’
I was in Groom Creek where a Death actually happened last month.
I’ve done the research——
I really wanted an Echelon but I can’t honestly feel safe with a Semiautomatic.

Biggest problem was lack of a lower powered ammo for practice or general use. Both the .357 and .44 Magnums, as you undoubtedly know, were developed from Specials. Plus, since Cops back in the early 60’s didn’t go to guns often and hauling a N frame on your belt would be a pain. The K frame Combat Magnum was a much better issue gun.

Here in New Mexico, occasionally one of the 58’s with Austin (TX) Police markings shows up occasionally, but not worth the premium people want IMO.
