When I retired from HR in 2008, applications already were being submitted online only. Writing a beautiful looking resume is a waste of time. They’re just looking for information.

The program scanned for words and phrases resulting in selecting or not selecting viable applicants.

I’ve heard that now some programs are scanning for two spaces after a period, giving a clue regarding applicant’s age. (We oldies do the two spaces; younger folk only one space.)

P.S. I’m so glad to be retired.

Purchase a copy of the book "What Color is Your Parachute". That has been the bible of successful job seekers for decades.

You will learn that sending out massive numbers of resumes is a waste of time and one of the poorest and least successful means to find a suitable position. Yes, prepare a resume but tailer it to the specific position sought and present it just prior to the interview.

If he is skilled and talented try freelancing, consulting, or contract. I’ve been self employed going on 15 years. Aside from our jerk government shutting down the industry for kung flu, and this wretched horrible chomo in office and the democrat policies stifling recovery, it’s been great.

When I was looking for a job years ago I read somewhere to find the name of the person to speak to, call them and say “Hi - my name is 21twelve and I’m interested in working for you doing xyz. I’d like to meet with you. Would next Monday afternoon or Tuesday morning work for you?”

Several companies (small to medium sized firms) took me up on that. One turned into a real possibility but it wasn’t the right fit for me.

One guy of a small firm (the owner) talked with me for quite awhile.

“So - do you have any opportunities here for me?”

“No - and I don’t expect to, we are really small. But I really wanted to meet you after your hell of a first phone call!”

He helped me out quite a bit in talking about other companies in the area (a new part of the country for me) that might need my help and the industry in general in that part of the country.

Yeah, I always tell my students that if you really want to get a job, go and talk to the people there. You might not get the job you want, but get referred to a friend or even to a different position where they might want you. Plus, as the work pool fills with more and more zoomer dregs, those that make personal contacts have even more of a chance.

That’s good. I worked from age 18 through age 70 and can’t say I was ever discriminated against but I am a woman so I was protected, right??? Today someone would advise me that I did have a grievance.

I remember days when we could give notice at one job and walk into a new job within a week or so. THAT was the “good old days”.

That’s interesting. I wouldn’t have thought those would be harmful but who knows what worked at one time wouldn’t work today! Ever constant change!
