Ukraine says air defenses shot down more than 40 “air targets” moving toward Kyiv
https://www.cnn.com/europe/live-news/russia-ukraine-war-news-05-29-23/index.html

“Ukrainian air defenses shot down more than 40 “air targets,” including drones and missiles, that were moving toward Kyiv early Monday, the city’s military administration said.

The attack Monday comes a day after a huge wave of Russian drones targeted Kyiv, marking the largest such assault on the capital since the conflict began, according to Ukrainian officials.

“Just 18 hours after the largest UAV attack on Kyiv, the enemy once again launched an attack on the capital,” the administration said on Telegram Monday.
The administration said initial reports of the early Monday attacks indicate a barrage of Shahed drones, as well as cruise missiles that may have been launched from Tu-95MS strategic bombers in the Caspian Sea region.

Serhiy Popko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, said there had been no reports of casualties.

“No attacks on Kyiv were permitted! We thank the air defense for their excellent work!” Popko said on Telegram.
At least one residential building in Kyiv’s Podilskyi district had sustained damage to its roof from falling debris, he added.”

@visegrad24 20m

Heavy rain has turned many parts of the frontlines in Ukraine into a sea of mud again.

Looks like there won’t be a chance to launch the counteroffensive in the coming days.

My kind of protest.

“Temps in low 70s, rising by the 10th”

Another class of freshly trained Ukrainian troops graduated yesterday in Canada, and new equipment keeps arriving.

A million rounds of Artillery fired with Western precision, will produce very different effects than a million Soviet -style rounds scattered about.

The Storm is coming.

Indiscriminate mass shelling on a city of line can be effective but bad on ammunition consumption and barrel wear as well as counter battery fire.
What it is not good at is hitting moving targets or targets that reposition. Also what is barrel condition of “stored” artillery and tanks. Like dropping bombs on open fields or peppering a field with a hundred shells and no one there. I guess looks good in the report and they can claim what they want. But is Ukraine MOD numbers are even remotely close SPGs and mlrs have taken a substantial hit as well as towed artillery

Be interesting to see what they have left when a tank can roll onto a trench and fire point blank and not be hit by anti tank stuff, not good. Bradleys and others firing auto cannons into positions is devastating throw in som 50 cal and it is a bad day.

I have been waiting for today's thread to comment on this.

The Patriots are getting the job done.

This is a clear indication that Putin is running the show.

“3 massive explosions in Sevastopol just now.”

Storm Shadow seemed to be effective anti-ship in Berdyansk recently. I was wondering if they might send one for every missile launching ship or sub in Sevastopol, at some point.

Artillery is great, but send more cruise missiles!

The Storm Shadow guidance system is listed as GPS, INS, IIR & TERPROM.

IIR = Imaging InfraRed.

I wonder how IIR would work for terminal guidance.

Would the Storm Shadow proceed to GPS/INS coordinates and then look for a specific IIR signature of a surface ship, submarine (at a dock), armored vehicles, or even a specific window in a building?

Anxiously awaiting BDA!

This is Forte10 about 2 hours ago. Right now, the drone has moved east and is having a close look at Kerch.

Ukraine acknowledged the attack. Russian propagandists say the planes were Su-24s outfitted with Storm Shadow cruise missiles. Reports last night was that the Russian drones bypassed Khmelnytskyi on their first approach as if they were going to attack Lviv, then doubled back and hit the airbase. There are probably some Ukrainian PSYOPs going on with Ukraine acknowledging the attacks and damage. But it really looks to me that Ukraine should be better prepared for Russian attacks on their bases in Western Ukraine. They’ve been caught flatfooted several times over the past month or so in that area. Obviously informed traitors feeding information to the Russians.

Russian forces hit military facility in Khmelnytskyi, destroying 5 aircraft

Ukrainska Pravda

The Russian army struck a military facility in Khmelnytskyi Oblast on the night of 28-29 May, destroying five aircraft.

“Russian forces struck targets in Khmelnytskyi Oblast overnight. One of them is a military facility.

At the moment, work on containing fires at fuel and lubricant warehouses and places where military materiel is stored is ongoing.

Five aircraft were disabled.”

“mass shelling on a city of line can be effective but bad on ammunition consumption and barrel wear as well as counter battery fire.”

Russia inherited the old Soviet Artillery and Armor stockpile - the biggest in the world.

I listened to a podcast from West Point, where the guest American Artillery officer stated that Russia moved somewhere between 3-5 as many Artillery pieces into Ukraine, as the USA has in its current force structure (the USA has around 4,000 on duty, ~2,300 of them howitzers). So Russia has likely committed the great bulk of the Artillery systems that it has (10-18,000, rocket, missile and tube), and is losing or wearing them out much faster than replacement.

They have shot through a few thousand howitzer barrels (3-4?), firing about ten million rounds. Most of those guns could be made operable again back in the depot, with a new barrel, but they probably would have to newly make the barrels. The Ukrainian General Staff claims it destroyed or captured over 3,000 Artillery systems (likely including MLRS, as well as howitzers, maybe even mortars), but their claims are likely inflated.

The Russian shell stockpile is likely more depleted than its fleet of guns (well over half), but that would be relatively the least challenging thing for them to produce. Trained Artilleryman have also taken brutal losses, in percentage terms. Qualitatively, they have fired through or lost more of their newer and better guns, than the older ones, so that is a factor as well.

Overall though, despite historic losses, the Russians still have a lot of Artillery. It could possibly be among the last major combat systems they run out of, but they are well on their way toward that.

I would agree with everything you said and additionally they are replacing lost tubes with older less accurate kit. Results are 10s if not hundreds of rounds to do what one Excalibur can do. Firing that much leaves you vulnerable to sitting and counter fire.
Additionally I would think that large amount of old kit is not in that great of shape as well they had large sticks of ammunition what calibers abs what condition are questionable
