How soon some forget it was Trump who bombed Russians in Syria. That seems more than a tad neocon-ish to me.

The reality here is Trump is just doing some primary season trolling to attract the fringe crazies. His actions as president do not match his current rhetoric at all. That makes it totally unknown what he would do in another term. He probably doesn’t know either since his situational positions indicate he does not care at all about these issues.

Kim had announced in 2018 that North Korea had successfully miniaturized the nuclear bomb, so no further testing was needed.

And you really believe that their decision had nothing to do with Trump? That’s your decision, but you’re naive if you do.

It’s interesting that you bring this topic up at this point in time, because there is growing concern among U.S. officials that North Korea is preparing to resume testing. We shall see, but it appears likely that there will be a resumption of testing which will demonstrate two things - that Kim respected and feared Trump a lot more than he does Biden, and that the explanation that you cited for why they stopped testing in 2018, was false.

The issue Trump cares about is American security and avoiding destructive and unnecessary conflicts. There’s nothing situational about Trump in that regard. He’s been consistent and his success in keeping us out of foreign entanglements and his de-escalation of tensions around the world during his first term shows how committed he is to it. The only sense in which Trump is situational is in the tactical sense. And that is an intelligent attitude to have. You have to be willing to be flexible if you want to respond intelligently to the myriad of problems that arise on the international scene. They’re not all the same and have to be dealt with individually.

It’s also worth noting that you’re relying on the explanation Kim gave to his central committee. What did expect him to say? - that Trump convinced him of the wisdom of stopping North Korea’s nuclear program? Why would you accept anything at face value from a communist leader?

From the article:

The North had successfully developed its arsenal, including miniaturizing warheads to fit them on to missiles, Kim said, and so “no nuclear test and intermediate-range and inter-continental ballistic rocket test-fire are necessary for the DPRK now.”

As such the North’s nuclear testing site was no longer needed, he told the central committee of the ruling Workers’ Party, according to the official KCNA news agency.

Right, because your proof North Korea stopped its nuclear tests because of Trumps visit is?

Absolutely! Of course with mail in ballots, it could be Friday before we know. I hate that!

Common sense. After two summits with Trump, Kim goes from being belligerent and making threats to use nuclear weapons against us, to announcing a halt on nuclear testing, ceasing with the threatening language, closing and partially destroying his nuclear facilities, and stopping long range ballistic missile testing. Things happen for a reason, and such a dramatic shift in policy from Kim on such an important issue doesn’t just happen on a whim.

If you don’t understand that, or are unable to figure out the sort of things that can and can’t cause such policy shifts to take place, then you’re woefully unequipped to comprehend the world events that are going on around you.

Right, just because two things coincide, that’s proof for you. That’s called naivete.

“I don’t think the Meatball really wants war. ... Still thinking about where he wants to go next .”

RD doesn’t “want” or “think” anything unless/until his handlers tell him what to want, think, or say. IMO, he’s much like Biden in that regard when it comes to national and international issues.

He’s been really good in one of 50 states — a big successful fish in a little pond. POTUS is on a grander scale, and he doesn’t seem to be up for the job.

His flip-flop on Ukraine was a seminal event; it showed (to me) that he’s lacking in fundamental principles. That war issue is huge! You don’t believe one thing at the outset, and overnight believe the opposite — unless someone tells you to do that.

For me, RD was a shoo-in for 2028, and I’d have been on that train. (2024 is for Trump, to serve the second term he won in 2020.)

Things happen for a reason. To believe that they don’t shows great stupidity on your part. To believe that 2 summits with an American president, and a historic visit to the DMZ have no connection with the de-escalation shows an inability to recognize cause and effect. When you walk outside your house and see the ground soaking wet with puddles everywhere, a person with intelligence concludes that it’s been raining. But you, on the other hand would be scratching your head trying to figure out why it’s all wet outside.

Right, and North Korean stated reason was they completed miniaturization of the bomb. Therefore, no further testing was needed, but you somehow extrapolate that it was Trump’s visit which made them stop nuclear testing. Okay, makes sense, to you.

Makes sense to anyone who can use reason. You, on the other hand, accept Kim’s explanation. The difference between an explanation that’s reasonable and one that’s not, is its ability to explain the facts.

Your explanation for why North Korea closed and partially dismantled its test facility is that they finished miniaturization of the bomb so there was no more reason to continue testing. There two problems with that explanation.

First off, if that explanation were true, why would it be necessary to dismantle and partially destroy the facility? And second, if your explanation were true, why is North Korea currently taking steps to re-open that nuclear test site, which they closed down under Trump?
