9000! One of the greatest blunders in military history.

“#Russia is now visually confirmed to have lost more than 9000 vehicles and pieces of heavy weaponry since it began its invasion of #Ukraine on February 24, 2022.”

“HOW TO FORGE SHELLS FOR UKRAINE’S ARTILLERY”

“Every day for months, Ukrainian soldiers have fired thousands of American-made artillery shells at Russian troops, and all of that ammunition begins its journey to the battlefield at factories in northeastern Pennsylvania. The oldest of those plants, in Scranton, first began making steel shells in the early 1950s for the Korean War.

The empty shells are sent to rural Iowa, where they are filled with molten explosives and packaged for delivery.”

“On the factory floor, spaces are being cleared for new machines so the Scranton plant can make even more shells for Ukraine.”

“We know that the 155th appeared for the second time in Donetsk and was actually defeated. The people who were newly recruited into the brigade turned out to be not quite competent, unprepared, so they decided to surrender.”

Excerpts:
[The war comes to Russia & Russia withdraws]

On a day when Russia claimed Ukrainian forces unsuccessfully attacked an oil pumping station about 20 miles northwest of the border in Bryansk Oblast, authorities in Moscow announced they have resettled nearly 4,000 residents of Belgorod Oblast due to ongoing attacks inside that region of Russia. And they are considering resettling some residents of the country’s Bryansk and Kursk oblasts for the same reason ...

The Russian state-own Transneft petroleum pipeline company reported that “an attempt was made to shell the oil pumping station of the Druzhba oil pipeline” on Tuesday, the official state RIA Novosti news agency reported Wednesday on its Telegram channel. “Ammunition released from Ukraine fell into a field in the Novozybkovsky district of the Bryansk region.”

The Druzhba pipeline is a key artery of oil supply from Russia to Europe ... with two branches - a northern one via Belarus to Belarus, Poland, Germany, Latvia, and Lithuania, and a southern one passing through Ukraine and sending oil to the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, and Croatia.

In addition to attacking Novozybkovsky, “the Armed Forces of Ukraine” struck “the village of Lomakovka,” Bryansk Oblast Governor Alexander Bogomaz said on his Telegram channel Tuesday, adding that “17 households received various types of damage” in that town about a mile from the Ukrainian border.

“Fortunately, there were no casualties,” Bogomaz wrote. “As a result of the shelling, households, a monument to those who died during the Great Patriotic War, and a shop building were damaged. Currently, the power supply is partially disrupted in the village. Emergency and emergency services are on site.”

There have also been a series of sabotage attacks and raids inside Russia by Ukrainian special operations forces, like the Shaman Battalion, which we profiled here. Ammunition storage sites have been especially targeted inside Russia as well.

... a planned $2 billion military aid package for Ukraine is expected to include the first provision of the Ground Launched Small Diameter Bomb (GLSDB). Wednesday evening, a senior U.S. defense official confirmed that to The War Zone.

Neither Air Force Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder, the Pentagon’s top spokesman, nor John Kirby, the White House National Security Council spokesman, would confirm that the GLSDB will be included in a future package when contacted by The War Zone on Wednesday.

ISW Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, January 31, 2023

The introduction of Russian conventional forces to the Bakhmut frontline has offset the culmination of the Wagner Group’s offensive and retained the initiative for Russian operations around the city. ISW’s December 27 forecast that the Russian offensive against Bakhmut was culminating was inaccurate.

ISW does not forecast the imminent fall of Bakhmut, and it is extraordinarily unlikely that Russian forces will be able to conduct a surprise encirclement of Ukrainian forces in Bakhmut.

Russian military command is overestimating Russian military capabilities to advance rapidly in Donetsk Oblast and in the theater.

Russian conventional forces may be replacing expended Wagner PMC forces by relocating them from Bakhmut to the Zaporizhia Oblast front line.

The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) may be attempting to fully supplant Wagner forces near Bakhmut to frame the traditional Russian military command structure as the sole victor around Bakhmut, assuming Russian forces take the city.

Ukrainian officials continue to support ISW’s assessment that an imminent Russian offensive in the coming months is the most likely course of action (MLCOA) and further suggested that Ukrainian forces plan to launch a larger counteroffensive.

Prominent Russian milbloggers continue to expose Russian military failures in Ukraine through increasingly public and elevated platforms.

Russian forces continued limited ground attacks to regain lost positions along the Svatove-Kreminna line on January 31.

Russian forces continued offensive operations along the Donetsk Oblast front line.

Russian forces are likely prioritizing sabotage and reconnaissance activities over territorial gains in southern Ukraine.

Belarus said on Wednesday that its armed forces were now in autonomous control of Russian-supplied nuclear-capable Iskander-M short-range ballistic missile systems, known in the West as SS-26 Stone, range 300 miles.

Ukraine’s state security service, the SBU, accused Bohdan Khmelnytsky, the ex-head of the Ministry of Defense department, with embezzling over UAH 100 million [$2.71 million] in state funds, Ukraine’s state security service announced Wednesday on its Telegram channel ...

“According to the investigation materials, this official purchased almost 3,000 bulletproof vests for more than UAH 100 million for the Armed Forces. However, according to several independent examinations, these products do not meet the requirements of class IV body armor and cannot adequately protect Ukrainian soldiers.”

The SBU also said on Wednesday that it had broken up a prostitution ring run by immigration officials, part of a drive to crush corrupt practices and meet Western standards on eliminating graft ...

The SBU said the ring had been headed by officials of the Migration Department of the national police, normally responsible for safeguarding the interests of displaced people.

It showed pictures of uniformed officers raiding a building and holding several men in a room as well as large sums of cash and pictures of young women seated on sofas in an apartment.

“These senior officials oversaw a broad ‘protection’ scheme for prostitution in Kyiv and in other regions,” the SBU statement said. The operation generated monthly income equivalent to more than $1.3 million, it said.

The scheme preyed on women aged 18-30 “in a vulnerable emotional state”, with victims sent to clients inside Ukraine and abroad and charging from $20 to $270 for services.

[From July 2022]

———————————————————————————————————————
••Day 343.

Today there is a lot of good news from the Zaporizhzhia front.

Here, the Russians launched a larger-scale offensive operation in an attempt to breach the Ukrainian defense to the north of Vuhledar to cause a chain reaction and collapse for the front line.

However, the Russians ran into entrenched Ukrainian tanks along the coal mines that completely defeated them and pushed the Russians all the way back to their initial positions.

Last time I told you that the Russians finally lost control over the eastern hamlet, which was essential for developing their offensive operation further, so the Russians were forced to start everything from scratch.

I also told you that the Russians started shifting their focus to the west of Vuhledar, likely in an attempt to enter the town from a less fortified side.

The main difference between the eastern and western axes of advance is twofold.

Firstly, assuming the Russians control the closest positions around Vuhledar, it is much easier to cross the fields by attacking from the east than from the west.

However, once the fields are crossed, it is much easier to enter the town and establish positions in the west than in the east.

At the first stage of the offensive operation, the Russians bet that shortening the distance as rapidly as possible was the best course of action.

But as it turned out, they underestimated the advantageous position of the Ukrainians.

The Ukrainians in Vuhledar just held passive defense, while the Ukrainians in the coal mines launched one counterattack after another, never giving the Russians an opportunity even to start storming the town.

Eventually, maintaining positions under constant crossfire took a toll, and the Russians were forced to step back and reconsider their plans.

Judging by the actions of the Russians, it looked like the second stage of the offensive operation would largely take place to the west.

However, after the Russians advanced in the direction of the industrial area, there were no updates from this region until some reports finally clarified the situation and said that the fields are densely mined, which significantly complicates any advances in this area.

But time works against the Russians, which is why they needed to resume their offensive actions somewhere quickly, and as Ukrainian positions in coal mines proved to be the most problematic, they made them the main focus of the second stage of their offensive.

The Ukrainians here also have a very formidable defense: they control the hills by maintaining multiple entrenched positions along the tree belts and local peaks; they are controlling the farmland that needs to be taken prior to moving further, and their main base is in the industrial area with mines and Terrikon.

On top of that, these battalions of the 72nd Mechanized Brigade have plenty of tanks at their disposal.

In order to create a breakthrough in this region, the Russians sent one group to imitate an attack on the eastern hamlet, another group to fix Ukrainian troops and not allow them to conduct a flank attack, and for the main axis of advance, the Russians sent their tanks.

Recent footage confirmed that Russian tank units were engaging Ukrainian tank units in the vicinity of coal mines. Unfortunately for the Russians, the attack was rebuffed.

A Ukrainian military officer reported that Russian forces failed to establish control over these positions and that high casualties and poor weather are constraining Russian combat effectiveness in the area.

In fact, today, the Ukrainian General Staff reported almost record-high Russian losses that amounted to 920 killed and 2240 wounded.

Even though the numbers concerned the whole front when the Russians stopped offensive actions here to regroup two days ago, their losses were much lower, 650 killed for that day.

The Ukrainian military officer commented on the losses and said that Ukrainian forces eliminated the most experienced Russian formations during the renewed Russian assaults near Vuhledar and that the 155th Naval Infantry Brigade of the Pacific Fleet had suffered extremely heavy losses.

And this is not surprising because, after more than a week of incredibly intense fights, the Russians essentially have no progress.

Nonetheless, the Ukrainian military officer also added that Russian forces continue to accumulate more troops in the area and will likely continue the localized offensive to capture Vuhledar.

Russian sources report that Russian forces are engaging in positional fights.

They also reported that the Ukrainians continue using distant mining to prevent the Russians from crossing the fields and that the area has been reinforced by artillery that has already assumed its positions and is firing at the main Russian bridgeheads, which is the northern part of Mykylske and Pavlivka.

Overall, the Russians failed to breach the Ukrainian defense in the coal mines, which was supposed to undermine the Ukrainian defense in Vuhledar.

The Ukrainians maintained control over all tactically important positions, including the eastern hamlet that they took back last time.

Storming Vuhledar in front once again proved to be a suicide operation. The Russians lost a substantial number of troops during the summer and autumn attempts, and they lost even more during the first week of the full-scale offensive operation.

For most countries, riots among your front line troops would be a sign that you don’t have the discipline and morale necessary to continue fighting and win.

For Russia, it’s just par for the course.
