And if you think about backyard raising, hatcheries charge as much for shipping as for 1-day-old chicks, small batches have an extra fee. Vaccine is extra. A coop unless you know how to build 1, is flimsy Chinese-made for 2-4 chickens. I priced it all out for 5 hens and 1 rooster, about $1,000.
Plenty of vids on how to DIY your own. Look up Teo Garden, he uses NO commercial fertilizer. DYI has some too. Ancestors used to use fish on their plants. Egg shells, fermented fruits/veggies.
I canned last year, finding apples, blackberries, potatoes, carrots, and 2 bushels of Ripley tomatoes plus replacing my broken jars was expensive, but it tastes better than commercially canned crap. I now haunt the Goodwill for half-price jars. You need a room dedicated to holding your stock, with sturdy shelves.
Better think about candle making and oil lamps for the rolling blackouts. DON’T FORGET TO KEEP YOUR AMMO STOCKED TOO.
