They are saying this originated here... so what is the difference between this and the muck occupying the attention of China right now? Are we going to have overlapping rarely lethal variants now?

That’s all you need to know right there. Viruses evolve a certain way. And that way is to become more easily spread. In the process of this evolution, they become much less lethal. (As killing the host stops you from being spread, so don’t do that!).
