Yeah Buffalo had a blizzard but nothing out of the ordinary that didn't happen before in '77, and many years prior.

Back in the early 70s, I worked in Buffalo for the BSA, and lived in Niagara Falls, my district, right next to the Niagara River and Falls. We routinely had ~158” of snow each year, mostly lake effect. It all had to be trucked to the Niagara River, and dumped. Nowhere in tow to pile it up.

Yes, it was out of the ordinary.

It dumped lots more snow and lasted longer than others.

Just for the record, any storm that meets the criteria for the label of “blizzard” is by default out of the ordinary.

The thruway is STILL closed down! Unheard of even in ‘77. And yes I live in NY and my son and DIL live in Niagara Falls NY.

Buffalo and just south did get hit with lake effect and blizzard winds but to say it was “unprecedented” is a Rainbow Bridge too far.

Just posted this…..

26 deaths from Buffalo blizzard, as more reported after Christmas
https://freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/4119003/posts

I lived in Kenmore during the Blizzard of ‘77 and as providence would have it, I had taken the day off because the weather was so bad the night before that the normal 15 minute drive home took an hour. I decided to use a call in vacation day and when I got up and it looked so nice out I was bummed that I had wasted the day in the winter.

Then it hit. Literally. I couldn’t even see the house next door, which was a driveway wide plus three feet away. Everyone who went in that day was stuck for the weekend.

I was very grateful for being at home. Plus, my parents always stocked up well for winter so we didn’t need to go out for food or anything.

From a meteorological standpoint, yes, this blizzard was unprecedented.

Earlier in the fall, I warned my sister and brother that they could be in for some serious lake effect because of how warm the lakes were so late in the season.

Just because it hasn’t happened since you were born doesn’t make it “unprecedented”.

Most deaths were from people burning charcoal grills inside and other crazy stuff. I’ll wager a bunch of those people abandoned good old oil/gas furnaces for those “cold climate” heat pumps that were advertised by NYS ad nauseum this past summer/fall.

Heat pumps are great to take the chill off but when the power goes out and you don’t have a standby generator.

exactly. Hochul was droning on about “climate change” and “unprecedented.” BS! She’s not much younger than I am.

EVeryone knew it was going to be a bad winter just from the swarms of box elder bugs, lady bugs and now stink bugs (thank you China)
