Natural gas in Europe is starting to go up - it reached US$1,500 per thousand cubic meters continuing to put pressure on European industry, preventing it from recovering .

Cheap Russian natural gas has been highly beneficial for European industry, especially heavy industry, giving them a competitive advantage.

After the war, I expect European industry will demand an end to Russian sanctions of oil and gas.

“Media: US Embassy in Madrid sent letter bomb similar to one exploded in Ukraine’s embassy.

This is the sixth explosive sent to administrative or military buildings in Spain. All of them contained similar, homemade substances, according to Spanish authorities.”

the deep colds of winter are coming.

How cold this year vs the average.

once you got that then

the most interesting stats right now are how well dressed for winter the russian troops are vs uke troops.

russian troops in the early 19th century and the two wars of the 20th century knew how to dress for winter. that was their advantage.

Do they still dress properly for winter in the open?

Modern life habituates people to living indoors and comfy.

I’m expecting a 10 year war. 10 months down. 9.2 years to go. EU will have moved on from RuZZia.

This RuZZian draftee isn’t happy. And weather going to get worse.

“Russian mobilised soldier in Svatove reviews a wet pit that is his sleeping place and is burdened by questions of existential nature.”

russian tank losses 1523
russian artillery losses. 156

this war appears to be mainly an artillery war.

why are there so few russian artillery losses? especially as they are relatively static compared to russian tanks which are always mobile.

Destroying artillery is very hard to do. A gun tube is a small target.

Artillery can be many kms behind the front lines.

Tanks are frequently on the front lines.

Plus artillery hit behind enemy lines may not be visually confirmed with photos/videos for ORYX to catalog.

Europe should take Crimea, and all of the Black Sea oil and gas from Russia, to help pay for this war.

Speedy: Artillery can be many kms behind the front lines.

In an artillery war, the best (and sometimes only) way to kill artillery is counter-battery fire. The counter-battery kills are difficult to confirm.

Speedy Tanks are frequently on the front lines.

Enemy tanks on or near the front lines would be the highest priority target.

On the high-tech battlefield, there are many ways to kill a tank including: anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs), RPGs, Smart Artillery (terminal guidance), Anti-armor CBUs, and even anti-armor bomblets, such ar Rockeye, dropped from a drone.

Tanks can even be killed the old fashioned way...by another tank.

Eat it, Speedy:

https://sonar21.com/has-ukraines-army-been-reduced-by-almost-50/

I do not believe that von der Leyen misspoke nor did she fabricate the number. If it really was an error of fact all she had to do was issue a statement to that effect, e.g., “Mea culpa, I meant to say 10,000 not 100,000”. She did not do that. She pretended she never said what she said.

If the 100,000 dead number is true, then that means Ukraine’s total casualties — i.e., killed and wounded — is approximately 400,000. In other words, Ukraine has suffered almost 40% casualties since the start of the fighting. During the 20th Century, this type of modern warfare normally saw 3 wounded soldiers for every man killed. Using that ratio we get the 400,000 number for total casualties.

###

As I have discussed previously, Russia’s current military leadership is not following the tactics Soviet generals employed in WW II (i.e., mass troop assaults). Russia primarily has relied on massive artillery and rocket/missile strikes before launching a ground offensive. The Russian rate of artillery fire is unlike anything we’ve seen in history. More importantly, the accuracy of the artillery is enhanced by the use of drones and satellites to adjust fires, with updated coordinates relayed in real time to the artillery units.

Another factor contributing to Ukraine’s horrendous casualties is its lack of air power and effective air defense systems to counter Russian batteries. If Ukrainian troops try to attack a Russian fixed position, their movement by foot or vehicle is unprotected and vulnerable to Russian artillery or combat air.

It appears that some Western analysts who previously pooh-poohed the Russian tactics, are finally beginning to realize that Russia is serious about de-militarizing Ukraine via methodical, grinding tactics. There will come a point when Ukraine runs out of men and cannot field a combat effective force. It appears that day is approaching.

More RuZZian ‘purification’

“As Russia struggles in Ukraine, repression mounts at home”

“A new expanded law on “foreign agents” in Russia comes into force Thursday, signifying an intensifying crackdown on free speech and opposition under President Vladimir Putin that has accelerated as his fortunes in Ukraine have deteriorated.

It’s also further evidence of Russia’s determination to root out what it sees as Western liberal values, coming in the same week Russia’s parliament sent a bill expanding a ban on what it calls “propaganda” of LGBT issues to Putin’s desk.

The 2012 law on Foreign Agents, passed after a wave of public protests against Putin’s return to the presidency, required organizations engaging in political activity and receiving funding from abroad to register as foreign agents and adhere to draconian rules and restrictions.”

US considers dramatically expanding training of Ukrainian forces (https://www.cnn.com/2022/11/30/politics/us-military-expanding-training-ukraine/index.html )

(USA) “is considering a dramatic expansion in the training the US military provides to Ukrainian forces, including instructing as many as 2,500 Ukrainian soldiers a month at a US base in Germany, according to multiple US officials.

If adopted, the proposal would mark a significant increase not just in the number of Ukrainians the US trains but also in the type of training they receive...

Under the new program, the US would begin training much larger groups of Ukrainian soldiers in more sophisticated battlefield tactics, including how to coordinate infantry maneuvers with artillery (and Air) support – “much more intense and comprehensive” training than Ukraine has been receiving in Poland or the UK”...

...”If approved, the new training regimen would take place at a US Army base in Grafenwoehr, Germany, where the US conducts its own combined arms training. The base is also home to the Joint Multinational Training Group-Ukraine.”...

...”German and US officials have been successfully cooperating on training Ukrainians in Germany for months, and during that time the US has been building up its capacity for long-term training. Once the White House makes the decision to proceed, training of Ukrainian forces could begin quickly.”...

...”The 7th Army Training Command at Grafenwoehr carries out live and virtual training for all of the Army’s forces in Europe and Africa, resources that can instead focus on Ukrainian forces.

The US is not alone in its effort to conduct large-scale training of Ukrainian forces. In July, the United Kingdom began a major program to train 10,000 Ukrainian troops within a matter of months.

“The UK’s program focused on providing basic training to new soldiers with little to no combat experience. The US program would provide a far more advanced degree of training to Ukrainian soldiers in how to operate as a cohesive military formation.”

My comment: At Graf, Ukrainian crews and Staff officers could train on advanced simulators against and alongside of professional American and Allied Opposing Force (OPFOR) players. World class training. Very productive per day or dollar.

100,000 killed is getting into the realm of the possible for both sides. I would not be surprised if the Ukrainian forces have suffered more casualties than the Russians, because of the Artillery disparity.

“Russia’s current military leadership is not following the tactics Soviet generals employed in WW II (i.e., mass troop assaults). Russia primarily has relied on massive artillery and rocket/missile strikes before launching a ground offensive.”

That is the WWII Zhukov approach - wall of Artillery, then a wave of peasant soldiers. They are still doing it.

“The Russian rate of artillery fire is unlike anything we’ve seen in history.”

No, WWI or WWII saw more Artillery, by any measure.

“More importantly, the accuracy of the artillery is enhanced by the use of drones”

Yes, That is true.

“Russian forces have been withdrawing some of their units from Oleshky (East side of Antonivsky Bridge from Kherson) and moving them south.”

They were probably getting hammered, within range of Ukrainian howitzers.

That is an interesting insight to how the regular city joes see things, the guy is not warrior stock or a tough guy/hard-living male, he just wants to pay his taxes and live a simple, comfortable life without contact with the hard edges that rough men are hired to do in his eyes.

While it is nice to see a disgruntled Russian soldier, I doubt that many of us would like the guy if we knew him.

No expert here, but from what I have read, counter artillery fire is a real thing and both Russian and western armies have counter fire radars, thus making the stationary artillery a juicy target as soon as they launch their first salvo.

“Shoot and Scoot” mobile tracked artillery like the US Paladin M109, and the more recent HIMARS rocket launchers specialize in this.

“counter artillery”

There has probably been alot of RuZZia artillery destroyed this way with no visual confirmation for Oryx.
