Earlier it was reported that the zelensky and putin back in april had a deal worked out for russian withdrawal in exchange for ukranian promise to not join nato. (Its unclear as to whether the russian withdrawal included lands conquered in 2014. likely not.)

The US killed that deal. why? The US wants regime in Russia.

The same state dept people who were in charge of regime change in iraq are now in charge of regime change in russia.

this is why putin’s government is making such over the top statements. they’re afraid of being taken out. what’s more everything they do makes their demise ever more probable.

I just don’t see how any good can come from completely destablizing the russian federation. I don’t see how that can do anyone any good.

Those Nordstream pipelines are going to be flooding with corrosive seawater. If not repaired immediately, they are Strategic losses to Russia.

AP reports that the next $1.1 billion package of US Military aid to the Ukraine will include 18 more HIMARS launchers. 18!

Unfortunately, this is a contract for new ones (rather than a drawdown from existing stocks) so there will be a year or two delay.

“The package includes funding for 18 of the High-Mobility Artillery Rocket System, or HIMARS, and ammunition for them, and 12 Titan systems, which are used to counter drones. Officials have said the HIMARS and other similar systems were key to Ukraine’s battle successes in recent weeks. And the Russians have been using Iranian-made drones to target Ukrainian forces, underscoring the need for more systems to counter that threat.

Also in the package is funding for about 300 vehicles, dozens of trucks and trailers to transport heavy equipment, a variety of radars, communications and surveillance equipment, and other gear for soldiers. It also will include funding for equipment to detect explosives and for maintenance and training.”

This package is supposed to be announced today, and another next week, that will likely include more drawdown.

When the counterattack was launched and did so well and all that positive news was coming out for a week, I assumed the Russians would do something that would remind us that they were still a big dog, and our good period would be followed by a dark period as the Russians launched their reaction to regain footing and a morale boost.

Well, that's what the usual suspects here all said. And Russia has mounted a counter-offensive. They have sent significant forces attempting to hold the left banks of the Oskil and Siverskyi Donets Rivers. But Ukraine's offensive is the real deal, and Russia's counter-offensive has thus far been a huge failure. This a strategically significant region that Russia does NOT want to lose. They will regroup and try to establish defensive positions further east, but Ukraine has the initiative at this point, and regrouping without much of your armor is not exactly optimal...

The spectacle of hundreds of thousands of Russians fleeing the country to avoid being sent to Ukraine shows that despite the massive propaganda effort from the Kremlin and Russian media, the people (at least the smart ones) understand that the glorious "Special Military Operation" is nothing like what they see on TV every night.

Yep, even domestically Putin is suffering humiliation, setbacks, and defeats.

Not a good month to be the leader of Russia and there is nothing pleasant on the near horizon for him.
