I’ve been working with a humanitarian charity in Zaporizhzhia city since the war started.
The city is ram packed full of people who fled Donetsk, Luhansk, Mariupol and the southern towns. Maybe 70% of them are ethnic Russian people who speak Russian, who were no fans of Azov but fled for their lives when the Russkies and their proxies showed up in February.
Everything you need to know about the reality of this sham narrative by the pro-Russians is in that simple fact. Given a free choice between living under Russian occupation and living in Ukraine, most of those who could, fled into Ukrainian held territory not into areas under Russian occupation.

If Russia REALLY wanted a free and fair referendum it would’ve encouraged all people in all these Oblasts to vote, and it would’ve conducted a secret ballot. Ceasefires. Identity checks to ensure the voters are actually residents of the Oblast, not Wagner / Chechen imports.
Zelenskyy would’ve been completely exposed if he’d said no to a cessation of hostilities to conduct a free and fair referendum covering everybody living in the Oblasts.
Instead it’s bullshit door-to-door activity. See-through voting boxes with voters’ papers clearly readable in it, next to surveilled voting booths so it’s impossible to vote without Russian gunmen seeing which way they vote.
Voters cannot fill in their vote without the occupiers knowing who voted no. People who vote “No” are going on ze list. How very Nazified.
One apartment block has allegedly been shelled in Zaporizhzhia, by the Russians for the crime of having residents inside who refused point blank to come out to vote.
As well as forcing people at gunpoint in their controlled areas to vote, and making sure they are strongly discouraged from voting against annexation, and having masked militants from who-knows-where queuing up to vote as well, Russia has done everything possible to prevent anyone in Ukrainian held areas from voting.
Not one ballot box has been set up north of a line between Kushuhum and Temuvate. So the northern third of the Zaporizhzhia Oblast has been effectively prevented from voting.
The only way a Russian in the north of the Oblast can vote is by travelling over 40 miles across a combat zone, hand themselves into a Russian patrol, and hope they’re allowed to vote when they get there.
As I said yesterday on another thread, may the Russians who really wanted to join Russia so bad they enabled the most rigged, most blatantly fraudulent plebiscite in recent years - WAY more corrupt than the last US election - enjoy what they’ve just enabled.
When they start complaining about living in a totalitarian police state with a few hundred thousand Asian conscripts who think ALL Ukes including the Russian ones are expendable Khokols, pissed-off ‘Stanis and drunken Russian provincials...
