Unless you have a high melanin content in your skin, sunlight exposure - especially in the nothern portion of the US is unlikely to provide for enough vitamin D to be clinically viable (think in the range of 40-70 ng/mL) for a good target range to help stave off things like covid and Flu.
I was in the sun a lot and was still sub 13 ng/mL where the test basically can’t detect. It was only through supplementation that I was able to get to about 70 (10K units a day for about 6 months).
Actually, there was a post upthread that pointed out higher melanin content deters absorbtion of UVB rays from the sun and thus creates less vitamin D, so what I stated about that was bass-ackwards.
