People get their naive scale of the world from their familiarity with their immediate surroundings.

Very few have a clue as to how massive the atmosphere and oceans and land really are. We are talking serious mass. All the humans and animals together are just a couple of decimal points worth of inconsequential noise. Only God has the real power to make any impact.

We are too puny in comparison.

Take a transcontinental flight at a window seat. Or better yet, a transoceanic flight. You will see very little of anything human, for hours on end. We are specs of dust, and our bodily gasses aren't even shadows of those specs.
