Don’t eat the tamales.

Lots of fix-it guys and handymen are the same.

In our area several blue collar guys do lawn care in the summer, snowplowing in the winter—all cash, all the time.

They could go for barter if they wanted to...

That’s a brilliant idea! Are there good places to get the best deals for such online? I’m not so sure of my ability to not get ripped off from a pawn shop.

Wedding bands are another method. Get plain gold bands, preferably in your size, as close to spot-price as you can find. If people see you pull the wedding ring off your finger and use it to barter with, you look like just another desperate person. Nobody needs to know you’ve got 3 more in your pocket.

Years ago in Mexico I traded a $5 casio watch for $50 in blankets. I always said if I were to return I'd bring a bunch of them to trade.

It’s been a long time since I dabbled in the jewelry business, but as I recall, jeweler supply shops often had the best prices.

These days my obsession is with seeds, which have the advantage of being one of the few supplies that can make more of themselves.

Hi.

“What do they use for money in Venezuela?”

There’s a large Venezuelan population in the Bay area. I know a few couples.

Various means of exchange. Barter, gold and silver, the U.S. dollar and Sterling. Odd they didn’t mention Euros.

Heck, if you have a pistola, ammo is fungible.

If you can get a bunch of gold wedding rings for not too much over their gold price, that would be good in a barter economy.

When the guy you’re buying from thinks your down to selling your wedding ring, he’s not as likely to try following you home.

There is already an underground economy here. I worked with a guy from South America that had a neighbor that opened a restaurant in his house. Of course all off the books and permits. Don’t know how he handled the neighbors though.

The underground restaurant guy just claims he’s throwing a dinner party.

On a small scale, that’s just what you do, charge for being invited to family dinner.

Anyone have any thoughts on medical training? I don’t have the time for paramedic training. It would be great if there were classes for SHTF medical training (CPR, performing sutures, and so forth). I have some books on the topic, but that’s not the same as actual hands on and in person training.

Yup. I bought some Irish whisky knowing she didn't like it. Well, she somehow gained a taste for it. Same with my scotch. Funny how that works.

She's doesn't drink to excess really, it's just that a shot a day over a year depletes the good stuff rapidly.

I had a good laugh when I read your first post…. Course, I am guilty as well.

When the Rona was raging in 2020 I purchased a case of Eagle Rare off of shopboozy.com for @$35 per bottle. Course, the stuff is good and I eventually depleted it. Now…. If you can find it, they are asking @$70 per bottle……

I am presently on a George Dickel kick….

That is the type of Dinkel that I drink. My coworker from TN swears by it.
