Based on the mechanics of a firearm, we’re not quite sure how that’s possible.
The only way that is possible on a single action revolver is if he had his finger in the trigger guard and was holding the trigger down as he cocked and let go of the hammer. I know, I have seven single action revolvers.
No way, all of Colts single action revolvers going back to his first in, the Patterson, 1836 had a half cock. I'm sure they were thinking of a safety block. You can't load a revolver without a half cock position.
wow. I actually have not thought about that but it sure would add in reasoning as to WHY this happened.
I read right afterwards that if SNL had any balls, they’d have invited Trump on to portray Baldwin.

Other people on this forum who claimed to know said there was a version that didn't have a half cock. They said it was a known problem with the colt.
But I have no personal knowledge on this point either way.
I’m sure they must have meant a “hammer block” instead of “half cock.” There is just no way that a single action revolver can function without a half cock. I have owned and been shooting single action revolvers for over 50 years now, including one like Baldwin used, and have never heard of one without a half cock, I mean you have to put it on half cock to load it, and that includes both antique cap and ball percussion versions and cartridge versions which came out in the early 1870s.
