Lived in southern California for a few years in the early/mid ‘80s. Weather was great (though the air quality wasn’t). Rent and crime rate was high. Lots of entertainment choices. But, with few exceptions, the highest quality people i met were all from out of state.
I know what you mean. I grew up in a little town in San Diego County called Lakeside during the 60s and 70s.It was wonderful then. Left in 1993.Would go back to visit my parents and was sad to see what had become of that beautiful place.
Downfall of California began in the 90’s:
1. Liberal judge overturned Prop 187, which won approval by 59%-41%.
2. Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRAC) closed over 50% of military bases in California.
3. California Republican Party asleep at the wheel during the decade.
Results: Countless illegal immigrants move into California, Liberals empowered to take over all forms of local and state government, Conservatives leave as bases close and Defense and Space companies move to different states. Technology companies fill the vacuum and grow to the point where they now control speech and censor the opposition. Super majority of Democrats now rule California and will until the world ends. IMHO.
But it closes in on one everyday. Taxes for everything. Totalitarian control in utilities pricing to try and make us conform while they rip us off. Prices of houses and home insurance high, high, high and although Prop 13 allows us to limit the Property tax it still goes up 2% every other year. It is sad.
But the Paradise here--and it truly is weather wise and beach/mountain wise gets more and more chipped away. Very, very sad as California with all of its natural beauty and resources is turning to sh-t at the hands of the greedy, power hungry, totalitarian regime and their press maidens. Very sad indeed.
I remember when the San Fernando Valley was almost like being in the country, really a neat place some decades ago.
Now? It’s nothing but foreign nationals, Muslims, illegal aliens, misfits, and lots of crime.
In fact, CA was once the crown jewel of the U.S. Now it’s a place to avoid.
I grew up in Santa Ana during the 60s and 70s. It was so safe, crime was something you saw on TV. SA is now one of the worst cities to live in. I went back to my childhood home in 2019 as part of a vaca w my wife.
The place is a dump as is SA. Took 2 pics and vamoosed.
...then Clinton(though started with daddy Bush), 90's border flood, (environmentalist) blue collar flush-out.
...bye.
Dems had a plan...it worked.
We need a plan.
““America’s Greatest City” (Then). I’m sure you’re glad you got out.”
Late 80’s it was getting bad, I moved back to Ventura county and it was great. Brother hung on until a few years ago and said traffic in north SD is beyond insane.
So much for all those slogans 40 years ago about not letting SD become LA.
In the 20 or so years since I left Calif, been sickening to read what the liberal politicians are doing to the state I was proud to have been born in. Firearm BS and CARB smog sh!t were the tipping point.
ahhh, Santa Barbara! Grew up in Bakersfield and was part of the Bakersfield at the beach in Carpenteria... always went to SB for dinners near the pier. Lived in Westlake Village from ‘82 until escape in 2009 and the commute to Beverly Hills was a crawl, but still miss the weather and being 20 minutes from Zuma Beach. Got 5 acres and stone house in Central Texas for a fifth of the CA price and the kids finished High School in a rural small town. CA is now a place to visit and leave although the older brother is still in Bakersfield. Loved the CA of the 50s,60s and 80s... knew it was past due seeing an illegal vendor pushing his hot corn on the cob shopping cart around downtown LA in the early 2000s.
Moved fro Calif to Honolulu 20 years ago to join a startup. Did not get rich, but moved to the Big Island.
Tired of looking over my shoulder watching what sort of insane anti-2A crap the Hawaii legislature keep coming up with. So far, so good, but no decent shooting ranges to be found.
Was a shock to find Hawaii firearm laws, other than no CCW and 10 round pistol limits, were not nearly as bad. Bought a small place in Arizona in case I need to run fast.
I lived this, in OC about 50 miles south of the author. I had a front row seat allowing me to watch the destruction unleashed by the seriously misguided Reagan amnesty. An amnesty pushed by Senator Alan Simpson, R-Wyoming
When Dornan tried to challenge the legitimacy of Loretta Sanchez’ election he got absolutely no help from the national GOP. They allowed Sanchez to steal the seat. There was convincing evidence at the time of large scale voter fraud by an illegal alien interest group, it wasn’t just a case of sour grapes by Dornan.
That Dornan loss in 1996, along with the GOP establishment siding with illegals in the 1994 Prop 187 election, made it clear that the national Republican Party was and is as culpable for the California disaster as are the Democrats.
GW Bush was one of the national GOP who openly backed Mexico and its illegal aliens in the Prop 187, against the grassroots Californians trying to halt the invasion. Told me all I’d ever need to know about him.
Newsom was mayor of San Francisco and he literally turned it into a open sewer with the help of the democrat party.
Now he wants the rest of California to be the same.
Thanks Pelham, 100% on point.
doorgunner69, Ventura! Another great area! At least at one time. I suspect it has suffered a similar fate.
“...Dems had a plan...it worked.
We need a plan.”
You got that right!

Painful to hear, but I believe it.
GOP Post: Santa Barbara! I’ve lived and worked there decades ago. Loved it. UCSB / Goleta was very liberal even then, so I can imagine what it has become now. I’m surprised the city/area has held up as well as it has, though I’m sure that has much to do with the rich wanting to keep what they’ve got. Sad the way it’s being chipped away. I wish you the best there or wherever you may go.
I’m surprised we haven’t run into each other on 2a Hawaii.
I’m “groveler” over there.
Gun laws here really suk. But most people ignore those laws or work around them as you know.
No official ranges exist, but there are places to shoot.
It helps to know people. Hawaii is a banana republic, that also happens to be a USA state.
Et tu, Lakeside?
Hawaii should still be a Monarchy, not a State.
