Hospitals are paid to treat any patient in the inpatient setting according to a DRG. But hospital payment to treat patients in-house is based on the medical necessity of a patient. Nothing more, nothing less.

It is possible and indeed very likely that the lack of “hospital beds” means they do not have the nursing staff to care for additional patients.

If I am correct, and I think I am, this is in direct correlation to vaccine mandates for healthcare workers. Many nurses I hear from are leaving the profession completely rather than take the vaccine.
To have “beds” available, you have to have nurses, aides, housekeepers, techs, resp therapists etc, etc. available to do the work.

Yup. My mom's last day is this coming Monday, since the Methodist Hospital group here in Dallas is forcing their entire staff to be guinea pigs, and they already denied her religious exemption. Forgot to ask her how many others are quitting/getting fired, but I know they're having it rough, she said they cancelled all staff meetings because everyone's too overworked to go to them.

There are things called emergency room and surgical divert when it is unsafe to attempt admission based on resource utilization. And often hospitals are not reimbursed until well after the end of the hospitalization once the course of treatment is done and the DRG established.

A year ago it was around 15K for just reporting a case and around 35K for a death certificate. With inflation I’m sure the bounty has gone up.

I agree with you. More to this story than they are letting on. With 3 hospitals I’m sure one bed could have been freed up by moving a recovering patient to a recovery or regular room.

Scary indeed. I’m going in for the same operation Tuesday. Here’s the thing... It’s an out patient operation. In and out the same day.

Been there, done that. It is a several days in the hospital on a morphine drip before your gut cools down enough to even have the surgery.

Before that? AMAZINGLY painful. I got to watch the paramedics work on me from somewhere near the ceiling.

I am certain that without the morphine I would have gone into shock and died.

I think you’re right. We live outside Houston and I really don’t keep up with the numbers. I’ll ask my internist Monday. A friend that lives in our neighborhood in her 50’s passed Thursday from Covid. There ought to be a special place in hell for those who not only have put this virus on the world but have lied over and over about real Covid numbers and how we should live our lives at their command!
