The Texas Rangers certainly relied on them (after the US Army rejected Sam Colt's invention) versus the Comanche. Single shot muzzle loading pistols and rifles didn't do well against Comanche horse bows. The pistol is named after a Ranger. Sam Walker.

.....this month’s issue (June/July 2021) of The American Rifleman has a write-up of a new book by Charles W. Pate, “The Colt Walker Army Revolver.” looks like a really good book, well-researched....the darned pistol weighed in at 4 lbs 8 ounces....what a true “hog-leg” ......only 1,200 were ever made, however....

Indiana has an official state firearm. It predates the revolving handgun. The Gatling Gun was considered.
