I was and am a big Trump supporter. But one major thing I would criticize was his lack of control over personnel appointments. Why would you hire a neocon hack draft dodger like John Bolton, who in turn hired this Fiona Hill? Why would he hire Christopher Wray, the smirking FBI Director, bc Chris Christie owed him a favor? Why would he give free rein of the White House during Covid to Bob Woodward, who undercut Nixon and tried to do it to Reagan? A friend was passed over for a political appt. by Trump bc he said the personnel director was some never Trump hack. What on earth was he doing in that job, of all things?
Trump must have been bound and determined to hire the best candidates on paper so as to never be vulnerable to being accused of hiring people of less than stellar credentials. To do so is thought to be a sign that you yourself are also a bush league player. Trump seem always to have feared the verdict of history in this regard and was resigned to the fate of being stabbed in the back every so often by a traitor or an enemy plant as a good trade for the ability to say with a straight face that he always hired the best qualified people for every available post of any importance.
