I looked at some other sites and they all contain the mistake, so Jefferson might indeed have made it—but the Monticello version actually has made a few alterations, such as replacing his odd abbreviations and his frequemt use of the ampersand (&) with the spelled-out “and”.

So I think they should fix “it’s” also, or else leave the original intact with its dashed-off feeling—abbreviations, ampersands, misapplied contractions and all.
