I remember the first Mustang that I ever saw on the road. It was at a gas station and the owner had just bought it. It was pale yellow with white interior, had a three speed on the floor with a six.
I lived in Evanston, IL then and bought the first one in town. Gorgeous convertible, I loved it. But, insurance companies didn’t know what it was and wanted to charge me extremely high rates or not insure it at all because they thought it was a “race car.” Finally found an agent willing to come over and look at it, got reasonable rate.
Great story.
How ‘bout that Mach e?
(Ducking)
My dad bought a brand new Mustang in 1968 or 1969...says he paid under $2k.
You betcha! Heck it practically spends itself! :D
In the early 1970s you could buy a Datsun 510 for under $2000. And the starter B210 was even cheaper. Toyotas were in the same price range.
I bought the last 1967 Corvette sold in Dallas when they closed out the model year back then for $3,900.00 from now defunct Bruton Chevrolet.
It was a 300HP, 327 Sunfire yellow roadster, 4 speed, Wonder at AM/FM radio, no AC, with a black convertible top.
What a car!
In 1969 I bought a VW bug for $1969.
Also in 1967 a Pleasant Grove Ford Dealer
had a line of about 20 Shelby Cobra GT500’s Mustang coupes of different
parked in a line in front of the dealership. Just visualizing now what I saw back then in that row just about makes me want to hyperventilate.
You could drive off the lot with one of those for a sticker price if $4,500. That was $600 more than I paid for my new 67 Corvette.
I just couldn’t see paying that much money for a Ford.
I also shopped a 67 AC Cobra priced at $7,500 new on the showroom floor.
That was way over my budget. But, I didn’t like it anyway because it didn’t have roll up windows.
Jaguar XKE’s I looked at were about $4,000.
One sunny afternoon in 1964, my friend and I were walking down our street when a flashy red convertible with white interior and bucket seats pulled up next to us. It was my friend’s father who owned the car dealership up on the avenue at the end of our street. He asked us what we thought of her mother’s new Mustang, which he was delivering to her. I still remember that day as if it was yesterday. What a beautiful car that was!
Not me! My original 1969 Chevelle Malibu, purchased in Nov 1969, is just a few years newer. But I love it nonetheless
It's my time machine. I feel 21 again!
The Mustang was a dream car when I visited the 64 World’s Fair, my brother bought a 72 Mach 1 and in 1979, after a tornado my brother bought 7 72 Mustangs from a Ford dealership when the tornado hit it (a tree came down and totaled those 7 Mustangs. My brother got the 7 for $1000, he parted out them and sold one engine for $1500.). Talking to a Ford dealer here and the Mach E is getting interest.
What happened to your car?
I was talking about the VW Bug. I really loved the ‘69 Mach 1, though. The Mustang II was an abomination, no question.
This car is, or was as of last year, still owned by someone in Geneva IL. We saw it at a car show complete with all the original paperwork.

My first Mustang was a 2003 SVT factory supercharged and intercooled 425 hp Cobra.
I won one of my dozen drag racing trophies with it. My other drag cars were autos more suited to bracket racing.
The 351 4V (four barrel carb) Cleveland was a much better engine than the small block 350 chevy. The heads outflowed the best chevy heads, and you could add 100 hp with just a cam change. Flame away bowtie guys.
My first car I ever bought was a '55 Bug during my last year in the Army in '68. Great little car.
My first car was a ‘54 Ford Customline. I was 15 (1966) and bought it from my boss for 35 bucks. Dad made me park it behind the house. LOL
