After looking at the first two links, it does appear that the gun was drawn before the mace was used. The first photo shows the mace extending all the way to the shooter, but the second photo shows the shooter aiming with no mace visible within three or four feet of him.

How was the media guy threatened badly enough to require a gun drawn and bullet chambered?
Why did the victim slap the security guy’s face prior to the shooting?
They can probably claim that they expected the service to screen their security guards.
