Give the situation for a SHTF scenario, semi-auto, hands down.

Think about the engagement scenarios ....you will need quick followup.

I suggest the following

1) A pistol (9mm)
2) A pistol caliber carbine (9mm)
3) A .556/223 semiauto (pick your platform, mine is AR)
4) A shotty 12 gauge, pump (it’s quick enough)
5) A .22 for food gathering

Suggested ammo
1000s of rounds 9mm
1000s of round of .556
1000s of rounds of .22
500 rounds 12 guage (buckshot) 1000 rounds bird/squirell shot

“But in the real world, under the yellow sun, a 270 or 30.06 bolt or a Winchester ends the mob real fast when they see their fellow mob member’s head do the JFK.”

Yup. Once the loudest and most obnoxious rioter’s head turns to pink mist the mob itself will dissolve pronto.

“a good large caliber bolt that can give you 18” groups or less at 500 yds”

So can an M-14/M-1A with iron sights. I would expect a big block AR and good barrel would also.

I had a bolt action...270.

Was a great rifle.

Sold it to a kid here in town.

Bot an older .308 lever action Winchester...

Love it...

I'd guess the only dif really is...if I'm hunting prone and want to rack another round in...I have to move a bit more.

“In a bolt gun??”

Yep. For example? I have an Argentine Mauser that would not feed the second round. After much research I found out that if the magazine well is dented a little (concave) the rounds will not feed. This seems to be a problem in this particular design. I removed the mag and straightened it and no more feeding problems.

What if you had dirty ammo?

Lever action rifles are my favorite. Maybe not so good at long distances, but a lot of fun cranking out the rounds.

Dirty ammo isn’t the rifle’s failure to feed, it properly rejected the idiot at the trigger’s decision to use dirty ammo.

“With the lever action, you can potentially match ammo to a revolver. “

44Mag in Winchester ‘94 and Ruger Redhawk..... thus my handle, DOC44

Quite the coincidence that your post hit at 3:08.

But a bolt action will come in handy if some Pronghorn sheep get set in up-high against you.

“...Unless you’re firing at insane distances with extreme precision...”,

That’s the plan for the first line of defense for here. It really boils down to your position and what’s to be defended. Here, we’ve always kinda taken a shine to being able to “reach out and touch” things. Anything that’s hostile the size of a tennis ball or larger at 500+ yards would be dead in its tracks utilizing a 6.5 Creed or 260 Remington with 123gr SMKs or 140gr Nosler BallisticTips. After that, it would be the age old reliable Biden “Dog Face Pony Soldier” 5.56 AR-14 for any of those that desire to be “up close up and personal”...LOL

The lever action allows one that aims with his left eye.

I’ve never had the dirty ammo (idiot) problem but I have had a failure to feed.

Here’s how it should go for every American:

First, BB gun. You should have this from the time you were old enough to hold it.

Second should be a .22. You should have this just as soon as you stop breaking windows and shooting people in the butt with your BB gun.

Third should be a shotgun. Before 10yrs old, prefferably 20 ga but any will do. You will need this for dove as they open the hunting season.

Fourth is a centerfire rifle. This should be around 12yrs old, you will need this for deer season.

After that you could stop......you now have everything you will need. But....... this actually starts the glorious time. Once old enough to have your own money it is time for fun guns. Whichever you prefer, the more the better. Maybe get Rambo’s AK or Eastwoods revolver, the choices are endless!

Why not 1 or 2 or maybe a dozen of each, along with a few good .45ACP pistols. Add in a couple of cross-bows and you’ll be ready.

I had an ejection jam on my AK today at the range. I think it was my fault for using good brass cased ammo instead of the cheap Russian steel LOL. Can’t use steel at the range.
