When Cortés and his army began their campaign against the Aztecs in 1519, over 30 million people were living in Mexico. With the Spaniard was smallpox. One hundred years later, after a series of smallpox epidemics had decimated the local population, it is estimated only around 1.5-3 million natives had survived. Let’s say such a plague was facilitated with air travel putting it in contact with humans world wide. With the death rate of smallpox, you would have 10% of humanity alive. Now, jumbo jet out the next plague, like the Spanish flu with its 2.5% mortality rate. Subtract .25 from that 10%. And, what it killed in the first round, it would keep on killing those who were left.
How would wearing masks prevented smallpox?
