I worked at Kenny Rogers 50th birthday party out in LA. set up the stage, sound and lighting. Dolly was his surprise guest. She flew in from filming a movie in Louisiana I think. They did an impromptu
Islands in the Stream ( not my favorite song) and Dolly couldn’t keep up. She apologized for ‘not having enough wind’ but she hasn’t sung in a long time. Kenny was so gracious.
And speaking of story tellers, nobody better than the late Tom T Hall.
Homecoming is one of most underrated country songs ever.
Thanks for sharing and praying for Susan.

Dolly couldnt keep up. She apologized for not having enough wind . . . Dolly Parton ran out of lung capacity? I would not have expected that.

I like the one about horses, whiskey, money, and women best of Tom’s work.

“The Gambler” was a classic song, that is for sure.

For Kenny Rogers my favorite was “Reuben James” (which reminds me of Walter Brennan’s “Old Rivers”) and from Tom T. Hall it would have to be “Old Dogs Children & Watermelon Wine”.

I always thought his song “Coward of the County” really nailed that story theme. Especially the line “Everyone considered him, the Coward of the County”. For most of the song the context implies the prevailing thought around town about the subject’s character, but the last time it is sung the implication is that it’s the way people used to think of the song’s subject.

I like to play a game with people the best first line of a song. for example “busted flat in baton Rouge waiting for a train.” But I really like “in a bar in Toledo across from a Depot on a barstool she took off her ring”.

Thanks, KierkegaardMAN, for the Kenny Rogers and Dolly story, and for introducing me to Tom T Hall. I know, “introducing,” right! I just gave “Homecoming” a listen, and I know what you mean now about storytelling!
Oh, and I’ve never read Kierkagaard either! Guess I’m not too cultured!
