<Sharks were apparently not a problem for Gay and others in that the Battle of Midway occurred in the vast empty space of the Pacific, away from schools of fish and feeding grounds that attract sharks.

Oceanic White Tipped Sharks are pretty fierce. They travel the mid-ocean expanses looking for a meal and are not easily deterred when they find one. Ensign Gay is fortunate that he didn't spend another night in the water.

You are, of course, correct about the aggressiveness of oceanic whitetip sharks. I did not mean to imply that there was no risk of shark attacks, only that the risk was appreciably less than is often assumed.

Oceanic whitetips tend though to be solitary hunters unless schools of baitfish or other routine sources or indicators of food draw them together. The horrific mass shark attack on the survivors of the Indianapolis was thus unusual and ought not to be thought the norm and expected as having occurred to the survivors of the battle of Midway.

As for George Gay at Midway, he thought that explosions from the battle drove off sharks and helped protect him. Gay may be correct, for all I know. When I heard him speak some years ago, he impressed me as an unassuming and extraordinarily heroic and lucky Texas farm boy -- but not a shark expert.
