In a way, he was. In the 1920’s Hitler’s nascent Nazi party needed large numbers of brawlers to make street war against other political groups. He found them in thousands of unemployed veterans of the Great War. In return for joining the NSDAP, each veteran received an S.A. uniform, free meals at the `Sturmlokal’, and a sense of being part of a greater movement.
