I would recommend executing the worst of them in public. Maybe seeing their fellow fallen clergy doing the airdance would convince some of the other tempted priests to leave well enough alone.

And THAT was a property issue. Many people gave a dowry to the church to accept excess sons, so that the inheritance of the dynasty was not diluted.
The Church found itself in the same mess: how do you care for a spouse/offspring of the clergy? Ergo sum, NO marriage.
Then the butt banging began.
