Germany’s 2-1 defeat in Klagenfurt, which saw Manuel Neuer play his first game for club or country after a nine-month injury layoff, was their first against their smaller neighbours — who have not qualified for Russia — for 32 years.

At least it was more entertaining than when they played each other in the 1982 World Cup.

Mexico defeated Scotland 1-0 on Saturday at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City in one of its final international friendlies ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Giovani dos Santos scored the only goal of the match in the 13th minute. Mexico finished with 32 total shots, compared to four for Scotland. However, just 10 of those shots were on target for El Tri, summing up a frustrating night.

The most shocking thing was that Mexico actually played a “home” friendly in Mexico, as opposed to playing it in the US.

Yesterday I bought an official Deutschland World Cup 2018 shirt for my daughter with number 10 on it and then hurried home to watch the game.

I gave it to her and said 10 was going to score a goal today and then Özil did. I called her to the room to watch the replay and she was all happy dancing with her shirt on.

Then today I told her 10 was going to score again when they put Neymar in at the half. Then he scored and she dancing in her shirt again.

Neymar’s wonder goal on return from injury helps Brazil sink Croatia
Neymar marked his return from a knee injury in spectacular fashion as Brazil beat Croatia 2-0 in a friendly at Anfield.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward produced a superb individual effort in the 68th minute of his first outing since he fractured a metatarsal playing for the French champions in February.

I also have Poland and Mexico as potential “sleepers”.

There are doubts in Germany but I don’t feel that.

It is a matter of retooling and peaking.

I’ll go with Germany, Brazil, Spain.
The usual suspects.

This is fun. For example, to see who Poland would need to beat. Lewandowski needs to be fed balls, lots of them. If I were Poland I would try to force corners.

Could be that losing is the best thing that could happen to Germany before the tournament. I suspect deep down Löw was happy for that to happen, so he could light a fire into the team.

Spain couldn’t manage more than a 1-1 draw against Switzerland in its final match before traveling to Russia for the World Cup.

Spain was in control from the start but failed to capitalize on its chances and paid the prize after a second-half blunder by goalkeeper David de Gea.

Alvaro Odriozola opened the scoring for the hosts with a neat volley from just outside the area in the 29th minute. Ricardo Rodriguez equalized for the Swiss in the 62nd after De Gea dropped the ball in front of goal while trying to hold on to a weak shot from inside the area.
