I thought this interesting as it shows that Europeans were not originally light skinned and that evolutionary adaption to the colder, UV deficient environment brought about changes in skin pigmentation. Lactose tolerance was also an adaption necessary to stave off disease cause by Vitamin D deficiency.

The main point of the article: “Most of us think of Europe as the ancestral home of white people”. We’re supposed to stop thinking that.

Point that it doesn’t make: Natural selection favored light skin in northern countries, but it also favored high intelligence, so as to survive in a harsh climate, unlike in Africa, where no intelligence is needed to survive. That intelligence led to the development of a civilization, unlike in Africa, where the only verneer of civilization that they have came from colonial Europeans.

In as much as they have no such theory of how so many Asians developed pale skin, we can take this, and ONE theory that ONE ancient human sample found in Europe represented ALL “Europeans” back then, as an example of the continuation of the political denigration of “whiteness”.

Everyone knows that natural selection depends on passing on the genes necessary for survival and possibly an advantage in obtaining food. When certain genes became more valuable both for fight, flight, and food, it was a no-brainer for the species to evolve with light skins in the northern latitudes.

Therefore the lighter skin genes became more valuable in snow covered areas. Like the snow rabbit, light-skinned humans could hide easier, blending into the terrain while avoiding dinosaurs and marauding dark skinned people.

And like the polar bear at a seal’s air hole, they could blend into their surroundings for an ambush.

OF course, this meant going naked in the snow-covered terrain which led to the gene that today makes otherwise rational people to go swimming in icy water during the winter.
